Ultima Thule Collection
2015 marks 100 years since the birth of Tapio Wirkkala. Wirkkala designed a significant proportion of his work for Iittala - the most famous being Ultima Thule
Inspired by the melting ice in Lapland, Wirkkala originally created the surface of Ultima Thule in the 1960s after carving into a graphic mould. An exclusive design reflecting the thousands of hours spent perfecting the glass-blowing technique required to produce the effect. The patterns gradually change as the glass burns the surface of the wooden moulds.
To honour the great designer and the centenary, Iittala expands the Ultima Thule series. Two plates of different sizes, a glass for sparkling wine and a pitcher have returned to the series. A new sturdy beer glass will also join the product range. Iittala has also selected four schnapps glasses by Wirkkala, one from each decade, for a limited-edition centenary gift set. The set includes Tapio (1954), Ultima Thule (1968), Niva (1972) and Kaleva (1980) glasses
