(2009)
Brain/Cloud (With Seascape and Palm Tree) - Created in 2009 in occasion of his retrospective exhibition at Tate Modern, this print is a combination of elements from the Brain/Cloud installation displayed as a central piece in that very same exhibition. Having lived and worked for most of his life in California, palm trees are a recurring image in Baldessari’s work and function as an iconic motif for life’s absurdity.
This specific palm tree with its unusual shape and size functions as an irritation in an otherwise seemingly normal and serene scenery. Its surrealist quality is enlightened by the presence of a brain-shaped cloud hanging over it like a big balloon, the combination of both adding a disturbing quality to the otherwise stereotype image of a Californian beach view.
