MAYA, I’ILE PERDUE

Silkscreen

Manufacturer Weng Contemporary

(2007)
Maya, I’ile perdue - Silkscreen on paper.
Maya (illusion in Sanskrit), Lost Island is the trace of a performance by Alexandre Ponomarev who with the help of the Russian Navy, made the little Island of Sedlovaty visually disappear in the Barents Sea. The disappearance of the Island behind a smokescreen required the technical competences of the engineers and mobilised navy war troops and their team.
Ponomarev’s performances emerge in the collective space and even if they involve heavy negotiations, they end up creating a sound atmosphere of fellowship. For Alexandre Ponomarev, Maya, Lost Island toys with the idea of visibility, perception and the boundaries of what exists and what doesn't. With elements of reality he fulfils his dreams of abstract topography.
