MGO BOARD

Fiber-reinforced slab for exterior walls

MGO BOARD® Collection
MGO BOARDS consist of calcium, silicon, aluminium and magnesium oxides with lightweight aggregates; both surfaces are reinforced with alkali-resistant glass fibre mat.
These easy-to-install lightweight panels for outdoor applications are designed to resist the harshest weather conditions such as: rain, humidity, frost and thermal shock. MGO boards are weatherproof and will not swell, crumble or deteriorate and ensure exceptional dimensional stability.
This is an extremely sturdy system which is ideal for external walls, façades, false ceilings and external coverings in general; MGO boards are lightweight and very easy to install making them ideal for restructuring and renovating facades, cornices, parapets, porticoes and other architectural structures that require high mechanical strength and weatherproof resistance.
MGO boards may also be used in interiors where humidity or water are present rather than coated plasterboard which in these cases is unsuitable.

MGO BOARD
HANDLING AND STORAGE

Store under covering, protecting the material from rain and excessive humidity. Boards should be transported in vertical position (edgeways), and must be handled carefully to avoid damaging the edges. To cut the board, first cut away the surface reinforcement mat on one side with a cutter, bend the board to break and then cut the reinforcement mat on the other side.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Before installation, the boards must be acclimated to environmental temperature and humidity. Temperature should be at least 5°C. The temperature should be between 5° and 40°C during filling and finishing works and for 24 hours after completion. Allow boards to dry thoroughly before mounting. Do not mount damp or wet boards.

SUPPORTING FRAMEWORK

All wall, double wall and false ceiling profiles must be in realised, as provided by UNI EN 14195, in cold-rolled steel hot coated with aluminium and zinc alloy (Aluzink) in accordance with UNI EN 10215. Profiles should have a thickness between 0.6 – 1.00 mm and positioned at a centre distance between 400 - 600 mm; the structure should be dimensioned according to the static requirements of the project and wind pressure. All fixing parts, accessories, nuts and bolts etc. should be resistant to aggressive environments, namely in stainless steel or treated to ensure resistance to salt spray (salt spray test) of more than 1.000 hours.

WATER-PROOF TRANSPIRING BARRIER

MGO Boards are resistant to water but are not waterproof; consequently, when they are used for outdoor vertical curtain walls an anti-condensation barrier consisting of a waterproof vapour-transpiring membrane, must be placed between the structures and MGO Boards. Fix the fabric temporarily to the structures from bottom to top, positioning the sheets horizontally and overlapping the edges of the different layers by at least 10 cm.

INSTALLATION

Install the boards horizontally (crosswise to the profiles) in staggered joints, with the rough surfaces turned outwards, then screw them to the metal framework with special highly corrosion resistant MGO Screws (Ruspert type treatment with salt spray resistance exceeding 1.000 hours) positioned at a maximum centre distance of 200 mm. Leave a space of 3-4 mm between the board edges, filling the space when the first coat of filling is applied.

FILLING

The joints between the boards must be filled with the outdoor filler, MGO Filler Dry, which should also be used to finish the surface. Apply one 2-3 mm coating of filler interposing the alkali-resistant reinforcement tape; allow filler to dry then smooth off and finish.

FINISHING

Finish the surface with the same product MGO Filler Dry used to fill the joints, laying a coat of about 3 mm; bury the alkali-resistant glass fibre mat into the finishing coat, overlapping the edges by at least 10 cm. Wait for 24 hours, then apply the second finishing coat if necessary. Before applying any other finishing material, allow the finishing filler to dry and harden for at least 24 hours.

INSTALLING THE FINISHING PROFILES

Fix the PVC finishing profiles (edge beams, drips, expansion joint covers, cornices etc.) burying them into the mat on the finishing deck and overlapping the same over the edges of the alkali-resistant glass fibre mat. In particular cases, the profiles may be fixed to the metal sub-structure with the same screws used to fix the boards, or may be fixed to the boards with metal clips.

INSTALLING THE EXPANSION JOINTS

Expansion joints should be installed at every 6 m; joints should also be installed in the following cases:
- at the expansion joints of the building.
- at the floor division of the building.
- at points of variations of the materials of the structure or facing of the building.
The metal support framework should in any case be interrupted at the expansion joints.
