The internationally successful design duo Scholten and Baijings have designed the SHIFT cabinet for Pastoe, a Dutch furniture brand. This cabinet combines a minimalist shape with an expressive use of colours. By working with translucent sliding doors in different colours in combination with a colour gradient, an intriguing play of colours is created when the cabinet is opened and closed. Shift is available in two widths and can be either frame- or wall-mounted. The cabinet will
be introduced during the IMM Cologne at Design Post Keulen from 15 to 22 January 2012. A new tradition. The look of SHIFT is characterised by the two sliding doors made from translucent acrylate, the reverse of which has been coloured. A choice between a colour gradient and a solid colour is available. “When the doors move across each other, the colours mix, fade or are strengthened,” explains Carole Baijings. This is where it derives its name SHIFT from.
When they were designing SHIFT, Scholten and Baijings worked to stay true to the Pastoe design traditions. “This meant creating a clear design with an emphasis on surfaces and volumes,” says Stefan Scholten. The body has been crafted from very thin materials and the handles have been recessed. “This cabinet is easy to combine with others. After all, the company isn’t called ‘Pas-toe’ (a Dutch pun on ‘application’) for nothing.
