Cantilever stackable multi-layer wood chair
Artek’s all-black collection of tubular steel chairs comprises Chair 23 and Lounge Chair 26 by Alvar Aalto, and side table 606, originally designed by Aino Aalto as a stool. In accordance with Aalto’s ideology, the chairs are completely devoid of superfluous detail. They are perfectly suited for private and public spaces alike.
Aalto’s stackable Chair 23 was launched at the “Rationalisation of Small Apartments” exhibition in Helsinki in 1930. The combination of a steel tube frame with a bent plywood seat represented a modern continental approach in design. In Paimio, Chair 23 was used in the reading room, among other places. In the early 1930s, the sales of the chair and the manufacture of its steel frame were given to the Swiss company Wohnbedarf AG. Chair 23 featured in an extensive display of Aalto'sfurniture at the “Wood Only” exhibition at Fortnum and Mason’s in London in 1933. It was included in Artek’s collection already in the company’s first catalogue in 1936. The chair was in production for a few years.
