WW COLOUR SERIES
Lacquered oak chair
The two Ws in the chair’s name stand for Windsor and Wire, which allude to its form and materials. It’s a hybrid piece, which gives a contemporary twist to a traditional design language. The legs and seat are inspired by the classic lines of a Windsor chair, with the surface of the seat slightly carved for comfort. Shafts of 5mm powder coating metal wire extend upwards from below the seat. They fan slightly outwards from their point of origin before meeting the wooden backrest. This gives the chair a sculptural quality and sense of lightness. The playful juxtaposition of materials is typical of its designers, the multi-disciplinary design studio Hierve. The WW chair is available in a solid wood version, or with an upholstered seat in a choice of fabrics and leather. The solid wood options include oak and American Walnut finished in natural oil. There’s also a stained wood option, which is available in white, grey and black. H Furniture also offers a bespoke service, so clients can order a WW chair to different finishes in solid wood and the upholstery.
The WW Chair Colour Series is the latest interpretation of H Furniture’s WW Chair. Created in collaboration with Brighton-based branding agency Studio Makgill, the limited edition is available in a selection of six new colour-ways and is a bold experiment in colour, expressing the studio’s adventurous creative ethos.
The two Ws in the chair’s name denote Windsor and Wire, which describe its form and materials, along with its mix of traditional and contemporary references. The design of the WW Chair is respectful to its heritage, but introduces a striking new twist. To date, the piece has only been available in plain oak and stained black oak versions.
The new limited-edition version of the chair retains exactly the same form as the original WW chair, but plays with the possibilities of introducing bold colour. Studio Makgill has experimented with six new colour-ways, using striking juxtapositions between seat, back and legs, within a defined colour palette.
Each colour-way has been made in a limited number, so that clients can order several pieces of one single colour-way or a mixed selection between the 6 different options. The WW Chair-Colour Series is an exploration of permutation, possibility and perception — an adventure in colour and collaboration that puts Studio Makgill’s distinctive stamp firmly on the WW Chair.
The final colour set was not an exercise in subtlety, but confirmation that the original form can take such a bold intervention. This collaboration with Studio Makgill is part of H Furniture´s commitment of fostering creativity to enhance people´s lives, having already worked on design collaborations with talented designers including Vladimir Kagan and Ptolemy Mann.
