MA45 | Chair with armrests
Ash chair with armrests
Armchair with frame in black lacquered ash with mother of pearl inserts. Seat in woven straw or upholstered in expanded foam covered in velvet, fabric or leather.
This chair, produced by Mackintosh with or without armrests, is part of a series of furniture designed for the country home of the Scottish industrialist W.T.Basset-Lowke who, not satisfied at all, complained to the designer about the chairs, as well as about the table and the sideboard (see articles MA09 and MA00). Roger Billcliffe, author of the most complete bibliography of Mackintosh’s work, maintains that the great attention paid to the construction drawings of these pieces of furniture shows the particular value that the author gave to these designs.
