Lacquered mother of pearl coffee table
CUBIC DREAM - The mother-of-pearl patterns on the Cubic Dream series of cubes are hand-cut and embedded in 18 coats of lacquer, which are applied and sanded one by one. Imperial lacquerwork used to be produced on boats at sea, so the artisans could work in a dust-free environment. The cubes in the Cubic Dream series are made in Vietnam using the same ancient techniques and materials. The lacquer is made from the resin of the cashew tree. A mother-of-pearl pattern is hand-cut and attached to a cube made of MDF, which then receives a coat of lacquer. After a day of drying, the mother-of-pearl is scraped clean and the cube sanded and polished before the next layer of lacquer is applied. After the eighteenth coat, the mother-of-pearl is embedded in the lacquer and the cube has acquired a deep gloss. The textures of the lacquer and mother-of-pearl are shown off to full advantage on the austere cube shape. This combination means Cubic Dream suits a variety of interiors, from chic hotels to hip living rooms.
