'A la fresca' – A Tribute to the Mediterranean Way of Living
23/01/2020 - 'A la fresca', or an eulogy to the Mediterranean way of living. At imm cologne MUT Design present their personal view on the “perfect home” for Das Haus 2020. Architecture blends into the natural environment and its colors in a visionary experiment that dissolves the dichotomy of exterior and interior.

As in the typical houses of Albufera, everything is arranged around a central patio. But, unlike traditional rural houses, its functioning is turned upside down, or rather inside out. The patio, usually a place of conviviality, is transformed into a refuge where to seek peace and regain balance. Das Haus - Photo credit: Constantin Meyer; Koelnmesse

For this project has been inverted everything: rooms are facing outwards, daily routine is taking place on small terraces grouped around a central patio, the boundaries between indoors and outdoors become permeable.

Alberto Sánchez and Eduardo Villalón, intent to bring the Valencian sun to wintry Cologne, are inviting us on a journey through Spanish traditions, framed by a characteristic color palette that ranges from the opaque white of the limestone to the intense red of terracotta. It's a design experiment that stirs the imagination and addresses themes like the permeability of spaces and multi-functionality of the objects that surround us in everyday life.

'A la fresca' is the name you've you came up with for Das Haus 2020. What is it about, and what role plays cultural heritage in this concept?

The name 'A la fresca' is a reference to Valencian and Mediterranean traditions. Some of these are widely known, like the after-lunch nap, the siesta, or the preparation of the paella. But we Valencians have yet another tradition, and that's the one the concept's name refers t siting outside the house, together with your neighbors, to enjoy the cool evening air after the heat of a typical summer day. Someone is playing guitar, people are chatting and the kids are playing on the streets and sidewalks. The name very much reflects our roots and our Hispanic culture. Of course, the principal inspiration have been the characteristics of the Mediterranean house. From the outside it seems all walls. Inside , however, there is this large patio that continuously supplies it with fresh air and light.

What we did for Das Haus was to invert this concept. In the traditional house the patio was a space for the whole family, for socializing. Here it becomes an intimate, personal space that offers refuge and a sense of harmony. The rooms of the house, usually facing the patio, face the outside, thus removing the line that usually divides interior and exterior space.

How do outdoor and indoor spaces for various domestic activities communicate in Das Haus?

Initially, the idea was to defy the boundaries between inside and outside, not just from an architect's point of view but every aspect that is involved in determining the use of a certain space through daily routine. What we were looking for where new ways to link the domestic space with the natural environment that surrounds architecture. Das Haus - Photo credit: Constantin Meyer; Koelnmesse

The common thread is permeability. First of all we divided the space into two macro-spheres, one dedicated to conviviality, the other reserved for the individual. Then there should be separators that would further partition the space into four distinct areas: one for social interaction, one for cooking, one for repose and, finally, one for washing. Right at the center we have the patio, an intimate space. Everything always in a continuous dialogue.

From architecture to design. What are the product novelties for Das Haus 2020?

For this project we collaborated with various Spanish and international brands: for Diabla we have designed Grill, a brand new outdoor seating collection; for Preciosa Lighting, a traditional Czech manufacturer, we designed the pendant light Plum. Our collaboration with Expormim continues with the Armadillo armchair. With Ply and Gan there are two new rugs, as well as the Roll chair, for Sancal. The patio features Bow, a wall covering we designed in collaboration with Harmony by Peronda. Das Haus - Photo credit: Constantin Meyer; Koelnmesse

MUT Design has been selected among many internationally renowned designers. What's the message behind the project?

In this precise moment, considering the dramatic changes caused by the tangible effects of the climate change, we need to bethink of traditional ways, not least perhaps how we conceptualize and live architecture. The project of Das Haus 2020 reflects a strong appeal to rural architecture. We wanted to give an idea of our traditions and how we always lived the outdoors. Perhaps it can be inspiration to the designers of the future.

What would you like visitors to take home from this year's edition of Das Haus?

We tried bring some warmth from Valencia to Cologne. We hope that everyone who visits this tiny spot of Spain will take home some light of the Mediterranean sun.MUT Design - Photo credit: Constantin Meyer; Koelnmesse
