Enzo Mari was one of the most emblematic figures in Italian design. Born in Cerano in the province of Novara in 1932, he enrolled at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan in 1952. His long career began with his participation in avant-garde design movements, including the Nuova Tendenza group and the Arte Cinetica group, where he met Bruno Munari. In 1963, he became coordinator of Nuova Tendenza, for which he organised the show at the Zagreb Biennale in 1965. His work is characterised by an artistic and philosophical approach that is innovative and non-conformist, focusing on the educational and social aspects of design, which led him to develop an intense cross-design activity in the field of teaching and aesthetic research. Thanks to his many texts, today he is considered one of the most important design theorists in the world.
Mari collaborated with various brands in over 60 years of activity, including Danese, Ceramiche Gabbianelli, Zanotta, Alessi, Magis, Robots and Zani&Zani. In 1971, he participated with the Pago-Pago vase by Danese in the "Italy: the New Domestic Landscape" exhibition at MoMa in New York, a show that was to increase the fame of the Made-in-Italy vision throughout the world. Born from careful phases of study, sketches and prototypes, every Mari project is distinguished by clean design and attention to detail. Among his most significant and innovative creations are the 1958 Putrella centerpiece; the 1961 La serie della natura silk-screen prints; the 1963 Formosa perpetual calendar for Danese; the 1965 Il gioco delle favole for Corraini Edizioni; the 1978 Traccia tile collection for Ceramiche Gabbianelli; the 2002 Mariolina chair for Magis.
Mari was awarded the ADI Compasso d'Oro prize five times. He was also president of ADI from 1976 to 1979. In addition to awards for the Delfina chair for Driade (1979), the Tonietta chair for Zanotta (1987) and the Legato table (2001), Mari received the same award for his research work in 1967 and for his career in 2011. Many of his works are exhibited in important national and international design museums, including the Triennale in Milan, the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome, MoMa in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Enzo Mari died in Milan on October 19, 2020.
