Ross Lovegrove was born in 1958 in Cardiff, Wales. He graduated with distinction in Industrial Design from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1980. The following year, he completed a Masters in Design at the Royal College of Art in London. After finishing his studies, he moved to Altensteig, Germany where he began working as a designer for Frog Design working on projects like the Sony walkman and Apple computers. His move to Paris marked another seminal moment in Lovegrove's career. He worked as a consultant for Knoll International and joined the Atelier de Nimes with Jean Nouvel and Phillipe Stark, establishing relationships with brands like Cacharel, Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Dupont. Returning to London, he founded Studio X in 1990 and began working on projects for international fashion, furniture, IT and airline brands.

Some of the best-known companies he has worked with include Apple Computers (Ammonite laptop computer, 1995-96); Cappellini (F08 chair, 1994); Ceccotti (Bone chair, 1996); Driade (Spin chair, 1997); Edra (Air chairs, 2000); Fasem (Magic chair, 1997); Fratelli Guzzini (Handy programme, 1999); Frighetto; Herman Miller; Luceplan (Solar Bud lamp system, 1998); Olympus, Sony (Eye camera, 1996). He designed seating for Japan airlines (2001) and collaborated with Vitra (bathroom line, 2005) and Moroso (Supernatural chair, 2005). In collaboration with Solar Sharp (manufacturer of solar panels) and Artemide, he developed the noted street furniture line, Solar Trees, street lighting resembling stylised trees, powered by solar energy (2007).

Ross Lovegrove is a visionary and provocative designer, attentive to change and innovation in the name of sustainability. Synthesising technology, material science and natural forms, his poetics draw inspiration from the study of organic and geometric structures. His work has been exhibited in some of the world's leading museums, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim in New York, the Axis Centre Japan, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Design Museum in London and the Vitra Design Museum Weil Am Rhein in Basel.

Ross Lovegrove has received numerous awards and recognitions. The most significant include the RedDot 2010 Best of the Best; Batimat Design Award 2009; Vogue Traveller Ecology Prize, SOLAR TREE MAK Vienna, 2007; Elle Decor 2006; Good Design 2006; Wall Paper Design Award 2006; World Technology Prize, Time Magazine/CNN 2005; Final Nomination for the Prince Phillip Design Prize 2004; Good Design 2004; JANUS Paris 2004; Awarded Royal Designer for Industry by The Royal Society of Arts 2004; Designer of the Year, by Architektur & Wohnen 2001; ID Magazine Good Design Award 2000; iF Industrie Forum Design Award, Hannover 1999; Medaille de la Ville de Paris 1998; George Nelson Award 1998. In 2007, Phaidon released the monograph 'Supernatural. The work of Ross Lovegrove', a comprehensive review of the British designer's career.
