04/07/2024 - "A lamp that exists today but you know will be contemporary tomorrow and forever". This is how the designer Michael Anastassiades talks about Flos lamps from IC collection designed in 2014. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, Flos extends the family with three models in maxi size and a Special Edition of numbered pieces coated in 24k gold.
“I came across an online video clip of a contact juggler," tells the designer. "He was spinning a set of spheres, in the palm of his hands and up on his arms. There were moments when the spheres would seem perfectly still, on the edge of his fingers. Only if you looked very closely could you see them spinning around to achieve the balance. I got mesmerized by the magic of his skill and wanted to capture the exact moment. This was my starting point”.
A sphere balanced on a brass stem and an ethereal design have made IC one of Flos' most acclaimed collections in just 10 years. "After all," affirms Michael Anastassiades, "spheres have always existed, brass is an ancient material, and balance is an intriguing concept".
“From a design perspective, I believe that familiarity is at the basis of the appreciation that IC has been enjoying”, continues Anastassiades. “There is nothing more recognizable than a sphere and a straight line. While the somewhat mysterious balancing act, that engages both, captures a moment of stillness within a hypothetical movement that anyone can relate to”.
The IC, that was launched together with the String Lights, also marked the beginning of the collaboration between Michael Anastassiades and Flos. For the re-vamping and celebration of the IC Collection, Flos focused on two concepts: finish and size.
With the special IC 10 Anniversary edition, Flos and Michael Anastassiades wanted to celebrate the archetypical allure of the collection: its capacity – like that of precious jewels or art pieces – to stand the test of time.
“Inspired by the idea of ancient ornaments that we admire as cultural testimonies, we chose a gold finish for the Special Edition as a symbol of eternity rather than luxury”, explains Anastassiades.
Hence the development of numbered pieces, coated in gold 24k and signed by the designer, featuring the IC 10 Anniversary name and equipped with an Authenticity Card based on NFC technology.
The numbered edition in gold will be available for three models from the existing collection: the small table lamp T1 Low, the lower floor lamp F1, the big suspension S2, and for the three new maxi size models
Flos and Michael Anastassiades also decided to add a new imposing size to the IC Collection: the F3, S3 and T3 models (respectively: Floor, Suspension and Table) have been added to the family, all featuring an impressive maxi-size sphere (diameter of 45 cm).
This family extension was conceived to allow the application of IC in contract projects involving wide environments such as spacious lobbies, majestic stairways or large open spaces.
All the maxi size models will be available in the classic satin brass finish or in gold 24k.
