How it all started: When Dirk did not find a suitable garden table for his family 25 years ago, he decided to design a quality picnic table himself. This table consists of adjustable benches to allow children to sit comfortably at the same height as adults. The result was baptized “Gargantua” - a robust and practical table that facilitates better communication. Gargantua also helps us to fully appreciate the precious time we spend outdoors.

How it evolved: With the birth of Gargantua, the company Extremis also saw the light of day. Tools for Togetherness has been the baseline of this quirky company since the beginning. “What we design is more than furniture,” says Dirk Wynants, founder and chief designer of Extremis. “All our products are designed to connect people, to facilitate conversations and to make them more enjoyable.” 25 years of Extremis

“We don’t draw our inspiration from design magazines or from looking at other furniture: we look around to see what is changing in the world. Today, 55% of the world’s population lives in urban areas and the United Nations expects this percentage to go up to 68% in 2050. Extremis designs have therefore evolved from large picnic tables such as Gargantua and Hopper to more compact pieces of furniture such as Picnik, Virus & Bistroo.”

Extremis continues to grow steadily every year, all over the world. Even the furniture designs from nearly a quarter of a century ago continue to be bestsellers. You have durability of materials, but even more important is the sustainability of an idea. How long does a design remain relevant? The Gargantua came to the market in 1994 and was selected 20 years later for the terraces of The Interlace in Singapore. This gigantic residential complex was named ‘best building in the world’ in 2015. Even this year, companies such as Amazon and Porsche chose Gargantuas to furnish their company terraces. A quarter of a century after the launch, the Gargantua is just as easy to incorporate in other concepts. “That is our goal. We try to create the classics of the future. Products that remain relevant for generations”, emphasizes Wynants. 25 years of Extremis
