A Sculptural and Discreet Light. The New Bellhop Floor lamp by Flos

25/02/2021 - An elegant and discreet presence, but with a strong personality. Bellhop Floor is a floor lamp designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby for Flos to enrich the Bellhop family. This successful collection was conceived in 2016 with a small lamp designed for the tables of the Members' Lounge and Parabola Restaurant at the London Design Museum.

The original inspiration for Bellhop was the desire to create an object that would feature a kind light: a contemporary, battery-powered candle to take from one room to the other. Starting from this, Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby – known amongst other things for designing the torch of the London Olympic Games in 2012 – developed a whole collection that was later enriched with wall models and outdoor bollards. Bellhop Floor now completes the family: it adds new opportunities to interiors that require a visually comfortable, unobtrusive and classy floor light.

“Following the Bellhop portable and outdoor lamps, we decided to work on a floor standing version, one that fits the collection but gives a totally different quality of light. While table lamps are often discreet and offer direct lighting, the new Bellhop Floor has a more sculptural character. The archetypal elements remain similar to the existing collection; we took the top of the Bellhop and turned it upside-down, we introduced a combination of new materials - concrete, aluminium, glass and have also used bright lacquered colours.” say Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby

Bellhop Floor features a stable concrete base with a finish that is pleasant to the touch, an aluminum body, and an opal glass diffuser. Bellohop Floor was born from the desire to put together materials that are different but that are capable to enhance each other’s quality through a combination of colors. The body is available in the white, cioko, green and brick red variants, the diffuser is gray (for the variant with the white body) or white (for the variants with the cioko, green and brick red body).
