24/02/2020 - BIG has made a modular sofa system for Common Seating – to be moved, flipped, added, repaired or removed. A sofa meant to adapt (to people as their life changes).
The biggest impact on our environment is human consumption - and industries driving that need. On Voxel users are able to exchange everything: armrests, backrests, seats and legs. That also means it can be assembled in countless ways from 4 parts. Every part are interchangeable, so if damage occurs on a single spot on e.g. the armrest/backrest, you can just exchange, flip it, repair or just live without it.
Voxel is made on demand and shipped directly from the workshop - this is the only way we ensure nothing is made without a home to go to.
Q&A with Jakob Lange, Partner, BIG:

Can you describe it for me (as if I’ve never seen it)?
Jakob: Our Sofa is a modular sofa expressed through the concept of a building block, a three dimensional pixel – a voxel. The grid-like system creates a family of units that can be configured into multiple seating scenarios, from single unit couch to a large configurations

Were you inspired by something specific when conceiving it?
Jakob: We looked at the architectural principle of the building block while referencing elements from our buildings, such as LEGO House, 79&Park and Serpentine Pavilion – and taking inspiration from sources as diverse as Minecraft, Q*Bert and Mies van der Rohe.

Did you have a specific kind of space in mind for it when designing it?
Jakob: The flexible nature of the pixelated system means that the sofa can easily adapt to any space and to the needs of the person!

Did you give it a name? What? And is there a reason for that?
Jakob: The Voxel Sofa is derived from the grid-like system and characteristics of the modular furniture system.

If it was a person, how would that person behave or who would it be?
Jakob: The Voxel Sofa is a deep and comfortable sofa, with a quite structured appearance yet flexible characteristics. If it were a person, the Pixel Sofa would be able to move, flex and adapt to different configurations, making it agile in any environment – at home or at work – and responsive to any individual. We like the idea that a person can really grow and live with this Sofa, and make it an integral part of their living ecosystem.

Any last words you want to say?
Jakob: We cant wait to see how people live and grow with it!
