Agape Bathtubs. Aesthetics and Wellbeing
30/04/2020 - Transforming bathrooms from a functional place to an essential living space has always been a leitmotiv for Agape, the Italian brand that has explored new interpretations of bathrooms for 40 years.

Agape was founded in 1973 by the Benedini family. During these 40 years of experience in the bathroom sector the two brothers, both architects, have taken turns in running the business. Designer of many of the company’s most successfull products, Giampaolo has played a key role in creating new concept of bathroom. Since the 1990s Emanuele has been responsible for running the company, successfully keeping the beauty of the collections constant; giving space to the products designed by his brother as well as working with some of the most interesting designers currently on the international scene. From Enzo Mari to Angelo Mangiarotti, Patricia Urquiola, Neri&Hu, Konstantin Grcic, Sebastian Herkner and many others.

Fluid volumes, sinuous lines, essential geometries. The iconic bathtub by Agape is a real “architecture for wellbeing” for the most intimate domestic landscape.

In 1998 Benedini Associati designed Spoon, a successful stilistic and materic sperimentation, that became a real icon of contemporary design. Much imitated, but still unmistakable with its curvaceous shapes and bold yet welcoming personality, Spoon is the first freestanding bathtub to be made of Solid Surface, and now available in Cristalplant® biobased.

"I'd always been fascinated by marble bathtubs because of their strong texture – Giampaolo Bendini says – but I didn’t feel ready to create bathtubs in a too expensive and slowly producible material. Cupids form an artisan company inspired me. Once studied the tecnology - marble dust and resin – I realized that it could be the right way. And the egg-form was perfect. The following meeting with Cristalplant has deeply improved the product quality, even in terms of lifetime".

In 2019 the Spoon M re-edition will refine its formal, dimensional and material qualities with even softer geometries and thinner edges.

The iconic Ufo bathtub dates back to 2002, also by Benedini. A broad stainless steel disc with a white Cristalplant® biobased backrest: the simple shape conceals an unexpected design concept in which the bathtub becomes an “objet trouvé”.‎

Made of polished stainless steel or coated in white with a dark grey exterior, uses formal solutions and materials from large storage silos or industrial tanks, incorporating the same construction techniques.

"I believe that a designer" – Giampaolo Benedini says – "is a photographer who transforms what he sees in functional objects mediated by his personal life experience. Ufo was born when I’d already explored for our bathtubs other materials, different from the most usual ones. We were looking for a large bathtub, for image rather than for marketability. Due to the low numbers of potential clients, huge investments in moulds and equipment were not advisable. While I was walking along a country road, I saw a milk transportation tanker, that was my inspiration. I realized that I could have found a semi-finished product without any new amortisation".

2008 is the year of Vieques. Designed by Patricia Urquiola for the interiors for the W Hotel on Vieques Island - a tiny and unspoiled Caribbean island - the tub then became part of the Agape production. A project that fascinates by the contrast between inspiration – homage to the old tubs of past times in ready made style –and the sophisticated realization.‎

Thanks to the use of painted stainless steel, today Vieques escapes from its traditional, intimate and limited environment, to find space also en plein air.

In 2009 In-Out was born, the iconic round bathtub from the center of the room revisited in 2015 with a marble version.

In 2010 Ottocento was born. "The past has been the suggestion of an aesthetic alternative". This is how Benedini explains how the collection was born. The bathtub is inspired by the forms of the past, that of the ancient cast iron tubs supported by four feet.

The use of Cristalplant® biobased brings the project up to date as a trait d'union between past and present and gives it a soft and silky texture. "Cristalplant’s technical characteristics are better than enameled cast iron’s, since it is monolithic throughout its thickness. It means that it can be sanded but not modified in his visual appearance. It is more pleasant to the touch and precise in dimensions".

Formal contrasts, soft curves and alternating volumes define the Cuna and Lariana collections, born respectively in 2015 and 2016 from the renewed collaboration with Urquiola.

A bathtub conceived to meet the new needs of modern living, but with a nod to Eastern traditions: this is the particular insight with which Neri&Hu created the Immersion project for Agape in 2017. Their insight was the fruit of careful observation of behaviors and habits in Shanghai, one of the world’s most dynamic and lively capitals. The Chinese metropolis, with its strong population density growth, offers ever-smaller dwellings and living spaces, which do not allow for the installation of traditional bathtubs.

Immersion’s compact shape and increased depth occupies a smaller surface compared to normal bathtubs. The minimalist and calibrated design re-interprets traditional Eastern wooden tubs, and the upright posture which the bathtub invites recalls the experience of the onsen thermal bath centers.
