14/01/2020 - The beginning of each year at TON
is defined by the international furniture and interiors fair imm cologne.
At the fair, TON introduces the minimalist Logs
coat hanger, which will be joining the prize-winning tables YYY
. In addition to its new products, TON introduces a new creative vision and its new creative director. After ten years of successful collaboration with TON, the designer Alexander Gufler
will now be influencing the brand beyond his own creative work.
The exhibition also debuts the minimalist Logs coat hanger. Designed by the German studio Büro Famos, Logs presents a clever example of waste utilisation. Sustainability was not the driving motivation for the designer duo Hanna Litwin and Romin Heide, however – their interest was in creating a simple product made from a small number of wooden parts.
“While it was not our primary intention to follow the sustainability trend, we did notice that the TON production process produced small pieces of quality beech and oak wood that were no longer suitable for making chairs, yet were ideal for the product we had in mind,” explains Hanna the initial thinking behind their design. “The neat idea to utilise production off-cuts was further enhanced by product packaging,” adds Romin.
“The coat hanger boxes are made from cardboard that was used for shipping chairs. Customers can request that the cardboard be returned once their chairs are unpacked, and the as-new material is perfect for packing our coat hangers. What’s more, the packing is done in a workshop providing employment opportunities for people with disabilities which is located in the TON factory complex,” elaborates Romin on the overall social impact of their product.
welcomed the new year with the news of the appointment of the company’s new art director. The designer Alexander Gufler has been named TON’s creative director effective January 1, 2020, setting the stage for the next phase of a collaboration that began a decade ago and has generated a number of international accolades for TON. Both TON and Alex Gufler anticipate that the new relationship will intensify their collaboration and bring new ideas to the product development portfolio.
TON’s latest products are on display at imm Cologne between 13 and 19 January 2020 in hall 2:2, stall C:014. Afterwards TON will head to Maison et Objet in Paris and the Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair.
