American hardwoods win big at Wood Awards Ireland 2014
30/12/2014 - American hardwoods were used in three winning projects at Wood Awards Ireland 2014, one in the Restoration category, one in Furniture and one in the Innovation Category.

'There are some really good architects doing great things with wood in Ireland and American hardwoods are a popular choice,” says David Venables, European Director of the American Hardwood Export Council. “From the lighter tones of white oak and ash to the dark richness of walnut. The construction industry has been through tough times but there a signs of improving activity so it's a good time to launch a new award to celebrate excellent design and craftsmanship in wood and inspire others.”

American white oak was the star of the Dublin Dental Hospital, designed by McCullough Mulvin Architects, which won the Restoration category. The idea was about inhabiting forgotten rooms of varying scale in the city, with a view to transforming a series of ordinary city structures into a richly layered internal environment. It provided the Dublin Dental Hospital with extended space on their city-centre site, including the addition of dramatic new pods containing a library overlooking Trinity College.

Timber panelling found behind layers of beauty board was reset internally: a new take on the panelled room. Fireplaces and floorboards were stripped back and reinstated. The American white oak was the material chosen to provide the contemporary look.

In the Furniture category, Gensler Architects in London, in collaboration with Henry J Lyons Architects in Dublin, worked together to create a structure that spans four floors of an atrium, with an overall height of about 15m. Best described as a ‘tree’, it comprises over 400 separate and individually unique timber elements in American white oak veneer on an MDF core, with a solid oak edging all around. This technically demanding project required an ability to work with very precise tolerances and alignments. O’Driscoll Furniture brought its technical knowledge to the project and worked with the design team to realise the structure.

The Contemplation Space was conceived as a free-standing structure form inserted into the main foyer of the new Mater Adult Hospital development. It provides a retreat for reflection away from the busy processes and interactions associated with the machinations of a large hospital. It won in the Innovation category; Laura Magahy provided the concept and the project was developed by Garvan deBruir with architect Michael Goan. The form is constructed using American white ash lattice, with an additional layer of lattice-work at a low level to provide privacy. The tapering bench uses American black walnut.
