'An Inspired Connection': kinder Modern x USM
22/05/2019 - USM teams up with kinder MODERN's gallery-style take on design for a unique collaboration. With a playful approach based on the ball joint for USM, the collaboration invites us to reconsider how we connect with each other in public spaces and at home, and devises ways for people of all ages to interact in a colorful and fun environment. Designs built using the modular Haller system include a mega-desk, giant pixel art, a mini basketball court, a cascading avalanche, and luxury carpet-covered seating areas. With innovative textiles, design furniture for kids, and must-haves from USM’s quick ship program, the show includes something for every family, collector and design lover. kM also features their award nominated play series, the Lunar table & eclipse chairs customized with USM colors.

Dusen Dusen (NY)
In 2010, designer Ellen Van Dusen launched Dusen Dusen, a womenswear line known for its bold, original prints on versatile, wearable silhouettes. In 2015, the brand expanded with the launch of Dusen Dusen Home, a textile and home goods line that includes bedding, throws, pillows, and towels. Dusen Dusen & kM collaborated to turn her check pattern into a custom kinder MODERN circular 100% New Zealand wool rug. This is the beginning of an ongoing release of modern and fun floor coverings from the Dusen Dusen pattern collection. The ‘Circle’ Check Rug will debut at USM + kM.

Cody Hoyt (NY)
kinder MODERN Founder and Creative Director Lora Appleton launched the Artist Collection with renowned American ceramicist Cody Hoyt in 2017. Made from 100% hand-tufted New Zealand wool and featuring light carving that accentuates the patterns’ subtle details and preserves their serene flow, these exceptional pieces transform the humble carpet into true art for the floor. kM has made the Hoyt + Appleton rugs into unique seating pads and nook insets to engage public seating with colorful & durable designs. Fort Standard (NY)
Fort Standard is a contemporary design studio and manufacturer based in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Founder and designer Gregory Buntain explores the interplay of natural materials and modern production processes to create distinctive designs rooted in simplicity and functionality. kM commission Greg to make a custom Cooperage children’s chair for kM/USM. The Cooperage Collection just premiered for NYCxDesign 2019. Each Cooperage piece features large faceted round elements that reference the traditional cooper’s trade of making barrels. Paul Ketz (Germany)
Paul Ketz is a German product designer based in Istanbul, who believes in the value and power of play. His Marshmallow Stool is made without a mold, the phthalate free, UV-stable, non-toxic polyurethane foam expanding through the wire frame into a one of kind piece every time. kM commissioned Paul to make custom marshmallow chairs in Classic USM Colors for the show in addition to one of his new high stool options for bars and counters.

Adrian Kay Wong (LA) - courtesy of Uprise Art
Adrian Kay Wong (b. 1991) presents encapsulated moments that display a focused lens on the intimate, familiar, and human connection. By investigating these sentimentalities with a deliberate and measured simplicity, Wong attempts to glorify the ordinary and reimagine the everyday. Diego Faivre (Netherlands)
Diego Faivre’ Minute manufacturing initiative uses his ‘Diego-Dough’ to cover furniture and objects. His work is inspired by Faivre’s previous experience as a blue-collar worker, where every action was meticulously calculated, recorded and assessed. Diego has contributed a full office series of minute manufacturing for the USM + kM Mega Desk, a mixed age 4-station desk (both sit & stand) as part of an Inspired Connection.

Rodger Stevens (NY)
Rodger Stevens is an American artist and sculptor whose principal mediums are metal wire and hand-hammered brass. kM commissioned Rodger Stevens to make a large, gorgeous original wire wall sculpture for kM + USM.

Visser & Meijwaard (Netherlands)
Steven Visser and Vera Meijwaard developed their Truecolors series after being inspired by the versatility and durability of industrial PVC cloth, as well as traditional camping closets and gymnasium equipment. Their design label, Visser en Meijwaard, creates distinct, but minimalistic, products from unexpected materials. V+M have made USM-color / “True Color” stools for the cosy nook LR environment.

USM + kM was made possible through the contribution of: Powerhouse Arts, who is responsible for the production of the Buckley + kM soft sculptures for USM + kM; May Furniture, who made bespoke tabletops for the USM + kM Megadesk out of their all wood proprietary product; and Uprise Art, who is providing the graphic paintings of Andrian Kay Wong.
