An Interview With Nina Mair About Bernard, Her Seating Collection For LaCividina
20/11/2020 - Bernard is elegant, soft, colorful and modular. A versatile collection of seating furniture suitable for both the residential and contract sector. Creating an all-round talent that responds to the conditions of architecture: This was the task set by Austrian designer Nina Mair and LaCividina for their first collaboration.

The Italian manufacturer of upholstered furniture LaCividina has been producing designer armchairs and sofas 'Made in Italy' for almost fifty years. Clear aesthetics, high-quality materials and perfect workmanship have helped the company achieve international success.

"At LaCividina, design and furniture are made with passion. You can feel this in every single product", says Nina Mair, "I consider myself very lucky to be able to contribute to this with Bernard".

The evolution of the Bernard collection began with the design of a single lounge chair, which is characterized by an L-shaped backrest. Back and armrest have the same height, so you can sit in two directions without moving the furniture. "This is a great advantage, especially in small rooms," explains Nina Mair. "A piece of furniture that is intended to promote communication must not contain any barriers. That's why we designed a rather low but wide backrest", she adds, "You can rest your arm in two directions and thus comfortably turn towards your conversation partner".

The lounge chair was followed by a smaller armchair, an ottoman, a day bed, a sofa and a coffee table. In addition to their variability, all the modules share a common design concept: a filigree, powder-coated steel construction on which soft, voluminous cushions are enthroned.

"The idea was to let a soft upholstery float on legs as filigree as possible. The steel frame can be coated in a wide range of colors to match the shade of the upholstery. The colors of the collection consist of a palette of fresh blue tones as well as a selection of warm shades from berry to mustard," says Nina Mair about the material and color concept of the collection. LaCividina has a wide range of upholstery fabrics from which the customer can choose freely. It is important to the designer that the color of the furniture can be matched to the materials in a room. "I like our Bernard in all colors, because for me function and form are the most important aspects of a design," she adds.

For Nina, the design process begins with the traditional hand sketch, as in the case of Bernard. Sketches, according to the Austrian designer, are "the best way to create a design". After detailed analog drawings, the design is transferred to digital, which allows for the exact elaboration of technical refinements and details. But even during the process of digital elaboration, the analogue research continues. "The most important thing for me is still the physical model. We have a model-making workshop in our studio and always create a series of prototypes on a scale of 1:1 so that we can really comprehend the form and check the function of the design," says Nina. The model is particularly essential for seating furniture, as seating comfort is difficult to check in any other way. When designing Bernard, Nina Mair paid close attention to ergonomics and proportions in order to provide the seating furniture with excellent comfort.

Bernard is a harmonious collection, versatile and positive. Whether in compact hotel rooms or spacious lobbies, living areas or open offices - Bernard can convince individually or in a group. Thanks to the many possible combinations resulting from the intelligent backrest of the lounge chair and the variety of different modules, original compositions with a modern yet inviting atmosphere can be created.
