05/04/2023 - The new Natuzzi sofa conceived by creative flair of Bjarke Ingels, founder and creative director of the BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group studio, was presented at Milan Design Week.

It's called Colle and is inspired by the first sofas designed in-house by Natuzzi and their comfy, hospitable style, typical of Mediterranean atmospheres.

We met with Pasquale Junior Natuzzi in the spaces of the brand's flagship store in via Durini 24, who tells us about the new project realised with Bjarke Ingels:

"Colle is the new seating system that is part of The Circle of Harmony project," explains Pasquale Junior Natuzzi, Chief Brand Officier. "And it is a seating system that is able to sophisticate one of the main distinguishing features of Natuzzi's heritage, that of visual comfort, i.e. the ability to give the product not only a comfort deriving from the material research of the upholstery, but it is a sofa that visually communicates a welcoming and soft feeling. This very Natuzzi element has been given a touch typical of architecture: an essential, material, breaking sofa, with vertical elements that cut through seat to armrest and back."

"We were asked to design a sofa family for Natuzzi, which was to depict comfort using few, simple design measures," says Jakob Lange, Partner, BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group. "We approached the task by combining contrasting materials – wrapping a plush cushion around a wooden construction, creating a solid composition with round edges and deep seats to accommodate contemporary living demands for versatility and softness."

The new Natuzzi sofa is a modular system consisting of an armchair module, two or three-seat versions, and various components - including corner units - to compose a proper relaxation space in the living area.

The seat and back cushions rest on the sofa's internal structure, creating informal and comfortable seating; an additional cushion rests on the side structure and becomes a soft armrest that increases the surface area for lounging. In addition, the new Natuzzi sofa stands out for the pleasant "wrinkles" that form on the upholstery, which enhance the softness of the design and increase the visual sense of comfort that the entire collection aims to convey.

"Our BIG Product team makes product design a literal extension of our efforts in architecture"Bjarke Ingels, Founder and Creative Director at BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group, explains. "Architects rarely can specify a building component from scratch, limiting our imagination to what is already on the shelves. Our work in furniture, lighting, transportation and the Internet of Things ensures that we connect the big picture to the small details, increasing our overall influence on the built environment."

The Colle sofa by Natuzzi sofa is part of the "The Circle of Harmony" project, started in 2020, a concept that has become a physical and virtual meeting place where different design interpretations of the brand's DNA are compared. In this fourth chapter, the designers called to participate in the Circle of Harmony have tackled the theme of comfort, which has always been one of the fundamental elements of Natuzzi's stylistic signature and one of the cornerstones of its history. "We wanted to dedicate this new chapter of the Circle of Harmony to comfort, an element inherent in Natuzzi's DNA," says Pasquale Junior Natuzzi, Chief Creative Officer. "A design idea that becomes a movement, a school of thought. We believe that the comfort of furniture is an essential part of laying claim to our quality of life. Comfort for Natuzzi comes not only from an unrivalled tradition of craftsmanship and continuous research in terms of materials and innovation, but also and above all from a way of understanding life. For years, we believed that stepping out of our comfort zone symbolised a break with the world that best represents us. Today, our aim is to furnish everyone's comfort zone by making it a place to inhabit with pride and a space to share where we can recharge our energy to face the challenges of everyday life".
