03/02/2020 - Gebrüder Thonet Vienna GmbH (GTV) returns to Stockholm Furniture Fair, the major exhibition event dedicated to furnishing on the Scandinavian scene. The company presents heterogeneous proposals, developed in collaboration with designers whose creative paths distinguish themselves above all in virtue of their research. Stories of projects which exude a contemporary spirit, capable of celebrating values of the past and the stylistic heritage of GTV, linked to the introduction of bent beech-wood. A heritage of unique allure which exalts the culture of craftsmanship, marking the crucial step from artisan to industrial production.

The stand presents three different sets which recount three distinct home interiors: a lounge, a dining room and a bedroom. Today Gebrüder Thonet Vienna GmbH also furnishes refined suites thanks to the introduction, last year, of its new headboard collection, marking the brand’s début for this particular type of product. The collection features three wall-hung proposals, a perfect match for neutral sommiers. Designed by GamFratesi whose lightweight style characterises RUE, on show in Stockholm; storagemilano with the architectural OTTOW and Chiara Andreatti with the decorative features of YVETTE.

The furnishing project designed for the Stockholm stand showcases in the living room the TARGA sofa by GamFratesi. GTV’s first ever upholstered piece, presented in 2015, has since become a best-seller and is part of an articulated collection including two and three-seater sofas as well as a modular version, lounge chair and pouf. All elements of the brand’s tradition contribute to characterize the design’s profile: the bent beech structure holds the wide seat cushion and the upholstered backrest has a woven cane edge with an ellipsoidal element, the plate (targa), after which the design is named.

The lounge chair SUZENNE by Chiara Andreatti denotes a project with a contemporary spirit which gracefully reinterprets characterising signature elements of Gebrüder Thonet Vienna: black lacquered bent wood and woven cane. The seat distinguishes itself in virtue of its lightweight solid bent beech-wood structure, in which straight and curved lines converge to support the woven cane back, defined by a wooden frame. Enveloping, soft seat and back cushions blossom symbolically, like the stems of a corolla. The set is completed by refined SINGLE CURVE low tables by Nendo.

Behind, the dining area is furnished with the elegant rectangular ARCH DINING TABLE by Front. Around, a selection of chairs: BODYSTUHL by Nigel Coates, MORRIS by GamFratesi, N.0 by Front together with the historic N.811 by Josef Hoffmann and WIENER STUHL, iconic catalogue projects from 1930 and 1904 respectively. Over the table, the suspended lamp WAGASA by Servomuto in its new black and white striped cover and contrasting green passementerie.

RUE is the absolute star of the last set, reflecting the formal clarity of the Nordic style which distinguishes GamFratesi. Discrete yet generous in its rounded forms, it unveils its character in the dual depth of its volumes, creating calibrated, overlapping plays on the wall. With its black lacquered and natural bent beech-wood structure, it is proposed in two versions: in the first one, the woven cane insert, an iconographic detail of GTV, is doubled by the soft upper upholstered element; in the second one, the woven cane defines the elliptical insert which is grafted onto the hollow outer frame.

Together with two other more recent proposals, MOS and N.200.

Calibrated in size, the MOS bench, another project by GamFratesi, is an element with a dual functionality: seat and container with an open shelf. A contemporary take on a traditional piece, MOS is designed for the bedroom and would be perfect at the end of a bed. Sleek and delicate in its aesthetics, with an elliptical shape, MOS really comes into its own when you notice the attention to detail, such as the inviting woven cane shell which conceals the lower surface and connects the seat to the feet, with their brass feet. The structure is made from bent beech-wood, while the bench surface is in open-pore painted ash, with a full-length upholstered cushion.

The lounge chair N.200 designed by Michael Anastassiades denotes the harmonious convergence of stylistic features of the past. In a profound stylistic harmony, the designer has interpreted the archetypes of GTV through his poetry and rigour: bent beech-wood and woven cane. Characterising elements of N.200 in which method and form craft a timeless seat, deliberately lean in its elegant minimalism. The company and the designer share a focus on attention to detail: the wooden structure features curving that creates the armrests and feet with apparent simplicity, showcasing the high manufacturing standards at GTV, while the seat and backrest in woven cane contribute to the overall feeling of lightness.

The showcase is completed by the ALLEGORY DESK by GamFratesi, the valet stand MAJORDOMO by Nathan Yong, the decorative LADDER by Charlie Styrbjörn Nilsson and the WAGASA floor lamp by Servomuto. On the wall, EYESHINE MIRRORS by Anki Gneib.
