Bethan’s Own Journey in Color
12/07/2019 - A psychedelic swirl of colors, abstract patterns and relief-like inlays recalling the frenetic dynamics of the modern world: this is Super Fake by Bethan Laura Wood. With her latest release for cc-tapis - aptly named 'Hot'- the designer offers a whole new look that evokes a color palette taken from the urban landscapes from Beirut to Mexico.

Presented in June at Beijing's Cabana HomeHot Super Fake is a collection of rugs that is dominated by warm and vivid colors. Drawing inspiration from the collision of the man-made with nature, it's consciously playful. A ‘fake’ interpretation and fleeting images of nature are transformed into physical and tactile reality by the skillful hands of Tibetan artisans Bethan Laura collaborates with.

Each carpet is based on a different rock form, which surface patterns are created through the organic build-up of sediment through time and a combination of materials under pressure. In these rugs each layer or facet is represented by a variety of beautiful rug-making techniques which have been developed over centuries by Tibetan artisans. Bethan uses the rock as a reference to explore the post instagram and ‘snap chat world’ where the fleeting two-dimensional image collide with a physical and tactile reality and the hyper and super-fake spill into our daily lives.

“Rocks and crystals have always symbolized a very physical reality of nature; when something is ‘set in stone’ it is a mark of permanence. With this series I hope to create rugs that connect and hold permanence in our fast-paced world by imagining a visual landscape that allows us, through its detail and dynamism, to lose ourselves and dream”, says Bethan Laura Wood.

The first edition of the carpets was connected to the color pallette developed based on London and the urban city, connecting to a larger body of work also called Super Fake comprising the Laminate Marquetry collection. A response to the city made from layer upon layer of consumer history, often using these 'fake' interpretations of 'natural' materials in 'cheap' substitutes like laminates highlights the contradiction between people's dual desire for the 'urban' and 'natural '. Laminate is a key material in particular to East London that reflexes the changing culture and popular tastes that shape the city over time.

HOT pallettes represents Bethan’s own journey in color since graduating with the work based on London, it combines colors that signal the different city's she has experienced in particular outside of Europe and made work about since 2009, from Mexico to Beirut, they have all shaped her knowledge and experiences of color.

Color is the leitmotiv of most of Bethan's production 'I love Color! I first gained the confidence to work more directly with color and pattern when at the Royal College of Art I was encouraged to not be afraid to use this as a tool with in my work and to celebrate the strong connections people have with color. There is definitely a clear shift colourwise in my work pre-and-post going to Mexico in 2013.'

Eccentric, audacious, irreverent. This is how the work of Bethan Laura Wood has been labeled frequently. In her own words the designer describes it rather as “a persistent oxymoron, a creative and emotional short circuit that explores the interplay of wide-angle view and detail, the ornamental and the functional, craftsmanship and industrial production.
