Imperfect Beauty

BOMMA’s new Fragmentglass process reimagines waste for the Fragments Lighting Collection

01/10/2024 - BOMMA and Studio DECHEM have teamed up to use glass waste to create unpredictable and unique design objects. Using debris left over from BOMMA's standard production, the team has developed a technique of upcycling glass shards, which are carefully arranged in moulds before being fused in the kiln, where the process takes on an unpredictable life of its own in a process of controlled chaos and creative randomness. As the glass melts in the kiln, bubbles, layers, and textures emerge, revealing the transformation of the glass.

Each piece in the first collection to use Fragmentglass fabrication, aptly named the Fragments Lighting Collection, is a faceted, angular, gemstone-like form. The designers control the mix of colours, shard size and format before the uncertain melting process begins. Colours swirl and blend to create a visual composition that is both fluid and frozen in time in a panel that is then hand-cut by the master glass cutter to make the individual facets of the final object.

The glass inclusions give the objects their earthy, raw quality that contrasts with the geometric precision of the angular shapes and the brushed gold or anthracite hardware, creating multiple layers of visual interest. The colour palette, carefully curated by Prague-based Studio Dechem, includes black, white and flamingo mint.

“The development of individual colours of the panels was a complex and lengthy process, where you continuously observe and evaluate how the pattern and structure of the shards arranged in the glass furnace will turn out after melting. After many trials, we have come up with three colours that can be beautifully combined, yet each is visually strong on its own,” says Michaela Tomišková, Studio DECHEM.

The pendants, suspended by thin cables, come in two sizes. They can be used alone or grouped in prismatic constellations where each piece reflects and refracts light in different ways, celebrating the beauty of imperfection.
