Celeste: The Homage to Farmworkers
19/05/2020 - DAM presents a new project designed by Christophe de Sousa, the first to be invited to design for the brand: Celeste. This product homage the farmworker, whose activity is often undervalued, but essential for everyone. On the slopes of the Douro, terrace by terrace, going up and down, Celeste hurries to remove bunches of ripe grapes from the vines. She tries to rescue them before the unpredictable weather makes her lose the effort and investment of an entire year. This is Celeste’s dayto- day life, a woman who grew up among olive trees and Douro vines. A way of life she embraced and in which she gets her support and the pleasure of taking care of the land and getting to know its rhythms.

Inspired by this character, we developed the Celeste side table. It is composed of a wicker basket that rests on a marble cylinder finished off with a half-sphere. The table represents a strong character that carries the basket on her back with the effort of her work. Thus, in an apparent balance challenge, the two simple geometric shapes are joined into a distinctive design that pays tribute to the farmworkers.

Produced in the north of Portugal, the wicker basket is born by the hands of one of the local basket makers who weaves these more or less rigid vegetable fibres. Its tracery gives lightness and subtlety to Celeste, revealing the craftsman’s mastery and the Designer’s enjoyment in giving it functionality and beauty. The Portuguese marble from Estremoz connects us to the land and its generosity in a geological poem.
