21/02/2024 - COKI, led by Italian product and architectural designer Coki Barbieri, introduces a fresh perspective on natural materials, drawing inspiration from two seemingly opposing sources: rationalist architecture and the intricate forms of the animal and plant kingdoms. Presenting her latest creations at this year's M&O, Barbieri unveils a range of lamps, vases and complementary pieces, each featuring striking combinations of glass and stone.
Founded in 2017 by Italian product and architectural designer Coki Barbieri, COKI is a brand that bases its philosophy on craftsmanship and concepts drawn from geology and chemistry. It incorporates new materials while repurposing stone fragments, scraps and minerals, embracing the use of local raw materials and traditional methods of stone, glass and metal craft. Barbieri's design process begins by experimenting with materials like cardboard and cork to prototype her ideas, allowing her to explore geometries and connections between elements. She then transitions to hand-drawn sketches and digital manipulation to design the final product.
Barbieri leverages the elemental forces of sun, air and water in her production methods. She emphasizes that nature serves as her primary muse, with each project embodying the potential to promote happiness, or eudaimonia.
In a poetic reflection on her work, Barbieri describes her communion with nature, perceiving the presence of invisible spirits (Daimon) amid the rustling of dry leaves and the whisper of the wind. She finds inspiration and guidance from these ethereal beings, recognizing their influence in the myriad forms of flora, fauna, and minerals. Barbieri suggests that by transforming these spirits into tangible objects, one can cultivate a deeper connection with Eudaimonia, the state of human flourishing and contentment.
