The founder of UNStudio is a lover of the curvilinear forms 'so prevalent in the human body' and has taken this to impossible extremes in architecture. He has also challenged Ondarreta to make a unique chair based on wood curved in two directions, of different thicknesses, stackable, slightly hollowed out to make it light and at the same time very stable, ergonomic and sustainable. Beauty and practicality were key elements in the design.

In describing the conception of the new design, van Berkel explains: ‘We wanted a chair whose stability, lightness and ergonomics would provide a solution to our exercises in engineering, in which we do not shrink from the challenges of reproducing complex curvatures and promoting organicity in large projects. We wanted it to be sustainable and pure, with the type of design that allows us to think about the future while at the same time retaining the nobility of wood as a material and the accumulated experience of the past’. As a lover of landscapes, Japanese architecture and nature, Ben’s interest in obtaining a sustainable design was a priority. After a period of study and the maturing of this design, the collection now also includes a table, which, being a result of the same philosophy, avoids edges and exhibits an impeccable finish in the joints of the curved pieces.

The table and chair in ash or oak are built for a variety of functional spaces. The sinuous profile and stackability of the SILU chair turn this family into architectural pieces. In the SILU table, van Berkel showcases the union between the legs and the tabletop. Inspired by architectural shapes, the leg curves to meet the solid tabletop. SILU by Ondarreta

It is collection with a very complex construction that in the words of Ben van Berkel ‘has taken as much time to develop as one of our buildings. It is not easy to build a chair without resorting to metallic assemblies to support its structure ... We are delighted that this one is made respecting the essence of carpentry knowledge, which is of the highest standard where Ondarreta is concerned’.

The collection thus embodies a fusion of traditional wood bending techniques and traditional know-how with the most contemporary design. Special attention goes to the rear gap and stacking piece of the chair with the option to fully customize it with Ondarreta’s upholstery range.
