20/11/2019 - Archiproducts commissioned De Castelli with the manufacturing of the prize trophy that goes to the winners of the Archiproducts Design Awards 2019. The trophy, a Möbius strip made of brass, copper or stainless steel, implements a conceptual idea by MUT Design and represents the close collaboration between brand and designer.

A single metal sheet is treated and folded on itself to obtain the shape of the award logo. In its conceptual simplicity, with two distinct surfaces merging into one, this object denotes the importance of the liaison between brand and designer.

The trophy was manufactured at De Castelli's Metal Projects Factory, located at Crocetta del Montello (Treviso), which hosts the company's workshops, as well as an extensive materials library. Archiproducts was given access and has documented the different working phases in this video.

The 100 prize trophies are the result of an elaborate process that comprises both manual and automated work steps. This limited edition, exclusively manufactured for the Archiproducts Design Awards, exploits the potentials of a protean material and experiments with its expressiveness by adding oxidation process to oxidation process.

Brass, copper and stainless steel are treated manually with DeLabré. This very particular oxidation process produces unpredictable chromatic effects caused by the spontaneous formation of cloud-like stains in different shades.

The original template, drawn by Spanish designers Alberto Sánchez and Eduardo Villalón, shows an object consisting of two surfaces without a dividing line, merging into one in a play of light and shadow, of filled and empty spaces.

The möbius strip turns everything upside down. Outside and inside are no longer discernible. Following a sinuous course and meandering over a two-dimensional surface the eyes return to the very spot from where they started. That is how we imagined the prize trophy, as an inherently seamless object: a single sheet of metal that depicts the principle idea of the awards.”

De Castelli’s artisan production is focused on operating principles which bestow the metal with a poetic component that accompanies unexpected and unrepeatable nuances.

Ever object is the fruit of a stimulating collaboration between brand and designer, or how De Castelli founder, Albino Celato, puts it: “Working with an artist will most certainly introduce a new sensibility to the project, a vision, a different set of interpretative approaches.”

His thoughts align perfectly with the underlying idea of the Archiproducts Design Awards, the awards that celebrate ever year the magic of designing and the synergies between people whose narratives make important chapters in the story of design and architecture.
