26/09/2023 - Fritz Hansen launches the Taburet stool, a sculptural piece designed by Cecilie Manz. Taburet is a testament to precision craft and versatile design, playing with the ambiguities of solid and void, depth of material and juxtaposition of detail.
Rounded on one side and open on the other, the design contrasts elliptical shapes with angular lines. The subtly concave seat, the perfectly tooled visible joints between the seat and base, and the meticulously aligned grain patterns are some of the object's distinctive details.
Taburet serves a dual purpose - as an occasional side table and stool - like many contemporary furnishings that must be flexible and adaptable for today's smaller multifunctional spaces. Manz's extensive research into this furniture typology led to the refinement of Taburet over time, drawing on traditional cabinetmaking skills, transforming a seemingly simple functional item into a thoroughly contemporary piece with a wide range of applications.
Cecilie Manz emphasizes the challenge of working with solid wood, an organic material that changes over time. She highlights the need to consider the living nature of wood as it expands and contracts. To ensure the precision of her design, Manz conducts full-scale tests with finished materials and exacting measurements. This process is integral to creating a product that captures the unique characteristics of wood. Taburet comes in two FSC™ certified solid wood options: Oiled Pine or Oiled Cherry, each with a unique grain pattern.
Manz explains that her design process begins with an idea long before pen and paper come into play. Adjusting specifications and refining the design is similar to proofreading a text, she adds - a gradual, essential process that ensures that the final product meets her vision. Manz sees her creations as part of an ongoing narrative connecting ideas, materials, and aesthetics over time. Her designs for Fritz Hansen include ceramics, lighting, seating and storage, embodying curiosity, innovation and sculptural elegance. Notable pieces include the Caravaggio™ pendant lamp, the Essay™ table, and, now, the Taburet stool.
