17/06/2022 - Paying homage to the art of Donald Judd, the new Glas Italia crystal tables by Philippe Starck.
After the Boxinbox container collection from 2015, the French designer offers up a new interpretation of coloured crystal, now investigating the relationship between colour and transparency - the Donald collection is born.

In a video interview conducted by Archiproducts during Salone del Mobile 2022, Philippe Starck talks about the Donald collection and his relationship with Glas Italia, "a dynasty of people who enshrine glass".

The new Glas Italia crystal tables evoke Boxes by Donald Judd, the American pioneer of Minimal Art. Created in the 1960s, Judd's works explore the relationship between form and space through simple, repeated volumes - parallelepipeds in metal, plywood and coloured Plexiglas.

Picking up on Donald Judd's work with colour, space and geometry, Stark creates a series of tables and coffee tables with pure shapes in 5+5 mm layered extralight glass. "Thanks to the magic of transparency, reflection and diffraction, one Donald can hide another Donald," explains Starck.
Observing the Donald tables from different points of view, the viewer can obtain ever-changing colour compositions and intersections "in a mental game in which the eyes deceive the brain. It's interesting to always have something available to play with to stimulate the brain'.

The base of Donald table is made from a thick mirror-polished stainless steel plate, topped by a volume in colored transparent glass, bonded at 45°, on which the color blends and fades until it dissolves and vanishes.
It is possible to choose either a version with degrading shade downwards or upwards.
A version is available with either black or orange degrading shades, or with a multi-chromatic effect, with the sides of the parallelepipeads in different colors (yellow, orange, pink, red, green), which mix when overlapped with the transparency of the glass.

The top, laid on the base, is joined thanks to an ingenious and refined interlocking system between mirror-polished stainless steel elements fixed to the glass.

The mirrored base of the coffee tables is finished on the perimeter by a thin profile in “supersilver” stainless steel, which protects the glass from impact.
The parallelepipeds can therefore be placed side by side to create articulated larger compositions or can be used separately as single elements.
