19/02/2025 - In today's open-plan world, work and conversation often conflict, creating the need for adaptable, differentiated spaces. Following up on the BuildUp Pods & Pavilions collection by Glimakra of Sweden, the brand has added the BuildUp Sofa to its acoustic booth system. Designed by Kauppi & Kauppi, the new extension provides a softer, more relaxed dimension by integrating seating that follows the curves of the pods and pavilions, transforming them into social, multifunctional spaces dedicated to comfort and interaction.
The designers explain the concept behind the original 2021 collection, which included three different-sized pods and an open pavilion, "In shared working spaces, we always look for that comfortable corner with a pleasant atmosphere, diffused light, and comfy seating. Our ideal space for workflow offers a muted but still audible contact with surrounding activities and an easy way to adjust the level of visual interaction."
The system was expanded the following year to respond to the growing demand for smaller sizes, adding new accessories along the way, including the sofa element that integrates perfectly with the pod geometries, whether within or in the open spaces often found in today's office landscapes.
As Kauppi & Kauppi describe, "The pods are friendly characters, also functioning as architectural furniture. At the same time, several technical solutions and features have been integrated into the design to make the rooms functional and creative. Our design reflects the long tradition and great knowledge of wood production, textile upholstering and acoustic solutions that characterize Glimakra of Sweden."
Designed for accessibility and flexibility, the pods have wide, threshold-free entrances. Privacy and sound control can be achieved by closing the openings with sound-absorbing curtains, available in manual and motorized versions.
Inside, each pod is accessorized for modern work with a magnetic writing board, monitor bracket, built-in power outlets, and AV connections. A metal channel along the walls allows for easy cable management, keeping spaces uncluttered and functional. With their open ceilings, natural daylight filters through the wooden roof rafters to improve the interior atmosphere. Additional glare-free LED lighting on the short sides and overhead fixtures installed directly onto the ceiling structure provide efficient artificial lighting sources.
With its self-supporting construction, BuildUp units require no permanent attachments to floors, walls, or ceilings, making them easy to install, relocate, and adapt to changing needs—offering a workspace that moves and evolves with growing and emerging workplace needs.
