Gebrüder Thonet Vienna GmbH (GTV) returns to the City of Lights for the third year at
Maison&Objet, with their most recent designs like the new two-seater sofa
HIDEOUT LOVESEAT, designed by Front of Sweden, recalling the design of their homonymous lounge chair, one of the contemporary brand's bestsellers. Another important innovation is the expansion of the range of fabrics in the collection, thanks to new collaborations with
Dedar and
Loro Piana Interiors, two excellent brands, very different in terms of character and aesthetics: Dedar's designs are more experimental and, at times, quite bold in their use of colour and decor, whereas Loro Piana Interiors' are more classical, with an innate elegance, using the noblest materials such as cashmere.
The
PROMENADE sofa by
Philippe Nigro, the first collection of modular GTV upholstery, heads the line-up in this new series. It stands out for its strong, distinctive decorative language, inspired by the minimalism and attention to detail of the Viennese secession, the artistic current of the last century. Working the wood with a squared rather than rounded cross-section, an approach first used in 1906 for the 'Postsparkasse' series, Philippe Nigro has created a visible structure with black walnut profiles that envelop the wide and comfortable seats, enhanced with soft goose-feather or polyester cushions for the maximum comfort. PROMENADE stands out at the trade fair for its refined upholstery featuring precious Loro Piana Interiors fabrics in cashmere blends, in shades of red and sage green.
The iconic
HIDEOUT lounge chair by Front, and the sophisticated DUET tables by Cristian Mohaded enrich the exhibition. The collection is defined by the interplay of curves, vectors and materials, and include a high and a low version. The curved beechwood legs with a square section are elegantly paired with the plate steel bases, creating a play on geometry inspired by the company's traditional lines and curves. The rectangular top, available in bronze-coloured glass or marble, gives the product a contemporary feel, making it suitable for any environment.
The exhibition continues with a set dedicated to the new HIDEOUT LOVESEAT (a 2018 innovation) by Front, a two-seater sofa designed for fine lounging. The upholstery is also new: a sophisticated, jacquard cotton fabric by Dedar in Lemon Grey, with a three-dimensional geometric pattern characterised by vibrant tones of yellow and green on a black background, which reinterprets the traditional, colourful Welsh-wool tartan blankets in a contemporary key.
Together with the new two-seater sofa, there is also the
CHIGNON lounge chair by
LucidiPevere and, also by Front, the
ARCH COFFEE TABLE. Preferring a counter-style choice over the classic aesthetics of the company, but keeping it mild and casual, CHIGNON stands out for the balance between softness and lightness with a veiled retro note. The curved wooden frame is designed to envelope and enclose the sleekness of the chair, acting as a support for the comfortable and voluminous seat and the soft, cheerful seatback. These elements are brought together by two beechwood curls – GTV's style trait par excellence – resembling a kind of hair-do. The result is intentionally feminine in form, not slender and delicate but shapely and voluptuous, with an intensely iconic presence perfect for any domestic space, but also for creating a relaxing atmosphere in a work environment.
At the end of the stand, a further living area features the
TARGA sofas by
GamFratesi. GTV's first signature upholstery, which includes an elegant sofa available in two sizes, 160 and 200 cm, a lounge chair and a pouf. This design is inspired by a new understanding of comfort – ideal both for work environments with a closer, more intimate feel, and for more unconventional residential environments. All elements of the brand's tradition come together in this exclusive design: the curved beechwood supporting the wide cushioned seating, whilst the upholstered back is finished in Vienna caning, into which the elliptical plate bearing the design's name is inserted.
Also by GamFratesi is the wall-mounted
WALTZ modular coat rack, inspired by the lightness of its namesake, the waltz. Its shape, though well-defined, allows great freedom of design thanks to the possibility of putting multiple modules together – each one consisting of three curved elements, the first two facing upwards and the third turned downwards – and positioning them along a wall on the same axis, or inverting them to reproduce the ideal line traced by the supple movements of two dancers who, whirling around to the rhythm of music, draw the characteristic profile in space.
Next to it, a dining area furnished with the
RING DINING TABLE, combined with
Nigel Coates'
BODYSTUHL chairs and the recent
CHAIR N.0. This is a Front design that suggests a new concept of elegance through the expressive force of GTV’s distinctive designs: curved wood and Vienna caning. The Swedish duo reinterprets these two elements in a contemporary key, enhancing their aesthetics, using the circle as a geometric sign for the backrest, the seat and, finally, the armrest and details, thanks to the new high-tech webbing on the backrest, which gives it a modern, captivating appearance. This feminine, eclectic chair is suspended in time: it plays on the simple forms and proportions of the formed beechwood design, with Vienna caning or high-tech webbing on the backrest and a charming single armrest on one side. Thanks to the finesse of the steam-formed beechwood, BODYSTUHL has a supple profile characterised by a variable sectional structure. The wide seat and ergonomic backrest in Viennese caning recall the shapes and materials of the Lehnstuhl lounge chair, another creation by the English designer for Wiener GTV Design.
Refined accessories, such as the
LADDER by
Charlie Styrbjörn Nilsson and the
EYESHINE MIRRORS by Anki Gneib, enrich the exhibition spaces. Of enormous appeal are the new WASAGA lamps by Servomuto, exclusively designed for GTV, available in both floor-standing and hanging versions, which combine prestigious materials like marble with textiles in soft, subtle tones and distinctive detailing in Vienna caning.
