Immersed in the vibrant atmosphere of one of the Big Apple's most famous neighbourhoods, noted for its cast-iron buildings, art galleries, museums and high-end boutiques, the new North American outpost of the Tuscan brand that revolutionised natural stone design is located in a typical New York building in shades of beige and orange, characterised by the city's typical steel fire escapes. On the ground floor, two large windows showcase the new Salvatori showroom in New York.
"Our ambition is to become the Italian reference for natural stone design in New York," says Gabriele Salvatori, the brand's CEO and creative director. Salvatori's new New York showroom reflects this ambition, combining typical Made in Italy elements with very American characteristics. "I lived for years in New York, a diverse and vibrant metropolis, always on the move," says Salvatori. "For design lovers, it is a real wonderland, a magical place full of unusual ideas that I wanted to be a part of. I don't know when the idea first came to me," continues the CEO. "Maybe it was walking through the streets of Manhattan, among the lights of the big brand boutiques and the aromas of the cafes, but the idea of opening a Salvatori showroom in this city took root in me".
Years have passed since that day, and now the time has come. Salvatori's New York showroom at 102 Wooster Street will open on 23 February 2023.
Each display area features a themed stone. Flooring and furnishings in similar shades give the impression of looking out over many small, adjacent, but independent worlds like courtyards along the streets of an Italian city. This effect became possible thanks to the synergy with the Yabu Pushelberg design studio. "With Salvatori, mutual trust, respect and a willingness to experiment make every collaboration fresh and new," explain the designers. "As Salvatori's first showroom outside Europe, it was equally important to highlight the brand's high technical level and soft, casual identity."
George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg opted for a concept that would foster dialogue between local and Italian elements, combining a typical New York interior layout with circulation reminiscent of a European urban structure. The non-linear circuit through the exhibition space allows visitors to appreciate the thematic areas in an industrial structure with exposed mechanicals, bricks and columns. The floors are in typical New York parquet and micro-cement.
"We built the space from scratch, designing every detail with the help of Yabu Pushelberg, with whom we have created several collections, including the brand-new Punto. George and Glenn are brilliant designers whose talent has shone through once again. The almost 600 square metre showroom reflects the charm, understated luxury and fascination of our approach to interior design," concludes the brand's CEO. The showroom is spread over two floors, with the ground floor theme rooms. The entrance staircase leads to a genuine Salvatori space. Lissoni's Colonnata bookcase takes up an entire wall, while Patricia Urquiola's Taula table is the focal point of the living area.
Candid Bianco Carrara distinguishes the kitchen, where the Cotone finish of the upholstery blends with the worktop's Levigato finish contrasting the Pietra d'Avola Stone Parquet flooring. This level also houses a service bathroom, a small homage to the 130 William Street project showcasing the Bamboo and Romboo versions of Grigio Versilia and the Adda washbasin.
