Translating the Archetypical Sofa into Architectural Comfort

Jean-Marie Massaud’s Pasadena Collection for Vondom

15/04/2025 - After their collaboration on Milos, Jean-Marie Massaud, who often explores the relationship between architecture and comfort, has again teamed up with Vondom to create the new Pasadena collection, further refining his unique approach. Pasadena is a modular system that juxtaposes the intimate with the expansive and the structured with the plush, moving beyond mere utility, affirming a commanding presence. ‘The ambition of Pasadena is to take an archetype and transform it into something of architectural proportions, but with a large dose of comfort,’ explains Massaud, referring to the ‘generic cage and pillow sofa’ that he takes a step further with the ‘sensuality of the profiles…a kind of elegance all based in proportion...the characteristic of timelessness.’ The collection includes a sofa, lounge chair, sun lounger, bar stool, and side table, all sharing the same language - measured proportions, fluid contours, and imposing but restrained volumes. The individual pieces are conceived to function independently as well as part of a larger ensemble in exterior and interior settings. A low-to-the-ground profile emphasizes horizontality, while the sofa’s generous seat goes beyond conventional dimensions to foster relaxation. The gentle incline of the backrest further reinforces ergonomic comfort. The bar stool and side table share the same vocabulary, with their softened edges and subtly tapered bases, while the sun lounger flows effortlessly from head to footrest.

The precision-constructed furniture has a strong yet light aluminum frame that supports upholstery in resistant weather-resistant polyurethane foams and high-performance fabrics. Massaud describes Pasadena as a study of “sensuality and generosity in profiles, nothing exaggerated.” Rather than imposing a singular vision of outdoor living, Pasadena adapts to different contexts, creating a sense of ease through essential, yet human-centric, form.
