15/04/2025 - During this year’s Milan Design Week, Uniqka introduces the Betsy Collection by Lara Bohinc, which reimagines leather both playfully and precisely, transforming the material into a three-dimensional surface that enhances furniture forms. Presented at Alcova, within the historic Villa Bagatti Valsecchi, Betsy is an exploration of the tactile – a meeting of the organic and the geometric where craft artistry transforms the familiar material into something exceptional.
“When looking at fauna, I have always been inspired by birds and how their feathers layer one over the other to create a textured surface that covers their whole body,” explains Bohinc. This inspiration gives life to a series of pieces - a round coffee table, side table, console, bench, and standing mirror - in which individual leather elements are cut, shaped and assembled onto wood frames to create a cascading, plumage-like effect. The tables consist of solid tops, while the layered leather elements wrap the base to form a rhythmic, scale-like surface. The cohesive composition balances ornament with structural clarity, notwithstanding the intricate detailing.
The tabletops are customizable with stone, wood, or metal finishes, offering variations in texture and opacity, contrasts that highlight the dialogue between raw materiality and refined craft. In fact, each piece is crafted in Uniqka’s Istanbul workshop by expert leather artisans, brand founders Kerem AriÅŸ and Merve Parnas. The saddlery leather is cut and assembled by hand in a production process that minimizes waste by using as much of the material as possible.
Uniqka’s collaboration with Bohinc is another step in the exploration of leather as an expressive medium. “Working with Lara has been an incredible journey, pushing the boundaries of traditional leather craftsmanship to create something truly contemporary,” comment AriÅŸ and Parnas.
