The two companies first came together in 2013 for Matteo Thun & Luca Colombo’s multi-award winning JW Marriot Venice Resort & Spa  project. The two designers from the Matteo Thun & Partners Group converted the artificial island of Sacca Sessola in the Venice Lagoon, with its 19 late 18th century buildings, into a 5-star lush garden resort. Very Wood’s understatedly classic chairs enhanced several of the resort’s deluxe rooms and suites.

Matteo Thun & Partners next teamed up with Very Wood for the roll-out of the IntercityHotel project. Since 2017 all of the group’s new openings and interior refurbishments have been assigned to the Milan-based team Matteo Thun & Partners, who have chosen to partner with Very Wood for their lounge areas, foyers and restaurants, in settings that instantly create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. At present 12 projects have been or are in the process of being completed, not just in Germany, and the brand is planning to expand even further.

Today the world’s leading hotel chains are asking for turnkey solutions with a recognisable personality to develop their brand portfolio,” explains the architect and designer Matteo Thun. “Timeless design entails creating solutions that can be replicated effortlessly and easily adapted to different styles and locations, without paying lip service to passing fads.”

Synergy, reliability and a holistic perspective are compelling traits that each company values in the other. Having started out with a relationship based on the supply of products for Italian and international projects created by the Milan-based practice, the next step was to join forces in the design and development of completely new purpose created seating collections for the hospitality and health care industries.

CARMEN

In 2016 Very Wood came up with its first series of chairs designed by Matteo Thun Atelier: CARMEN. This creative business partnership’s initial effort blended classic lines with a 60s vibe; ergonomics plus flexibility made for the perfect seating solutions for contract furnishing environments. Carmen has a streamlined, understated structure that nonetheless offers a multitude of different finishes, upholstery choices and colour options to suit the personality and style of every project.

The LISBOA came out in 2017: this new archetypal chair was unveiled at Milan’s Salone del Mobile furniture show and is particularly well suited to indoor and outdoor restaurants. Ultra-lightweight and colourful, the design is inspired by the traditional Italian woven cord chair – but in quite unexpected colour combinations.

Driven by the need to expand into the outdoor seating sector, Very Wood can now deliver an increasingly complete customised open-air offering designed by Matteo Thun Atelier; the latest collection to be released is in fact the CAPRI, whose name alone conjures up the glamorous Italian island.

CAPRI meets the widest range of design and stylistic demands in the contract furnishing sector, from common areas in hotels, to the balconies of private hotel suites, and from the solariums of high-end wellness centres to bar lounges and restaurants. Much thinking went into making CAPRI super-versatile: its basic structure couldn’t be more “normal”, yet – being made out of wood, whose characteristics are as superb as they are 'invisible' – it encompasses inimitable technical and functional brilliance.

Very Wood’s partners benefit from our incredible manufacturing skills and technological expertise – which is what they need to take on their most ambitious challenges,” explains Sergio Bertossi, the CEO of Very Wood. “We have over 30 years’ experience in the field of design and contract furnishings, enabling us to accommodate the most exquisite designs with the utmost functionality and flexibility. Which is exactly what this sector demands.'

The two companies are currently cooperating on new interior design projects for the hospitality sector, in Lucerne, Hamburg, Basel and Stuttgart, due to be completed in 2019.
