15/04/2025 - For many, healthcare spaces – necessarily defined by sterility and efficiency – can be daunting. NÅŒR Design, with the help of WOW Design products, overcomes this problem by reimagining such places with a more sensitive and comforting approach.
At Dens Dental Clinic in CÄ“sis, Latvia, designer Nora Gavare has created an interior that draws inspiration from the organic forms and earth-tone chromatisms of the surrounding Gauja National Park. The result is a place where material and light create a sense of calm – supporting the well-being of both patients and staff in a serene and sensorially rich setting.
The design’s central element is the ICON modular ceramic lattice system by Summumstudio for WOW Design. Taking its cue from structural concrete profiles, ICON transforms rigid partitions into open design elements that regulate light and airflow. Three-dimensional interlocking pieces form intricate geometric patterns that create shifting light and shadow patterns throughout the day. As a divider, ICON defines space without enclosing it, ensuring privacy while maintaining a sense of fluid movement. Gavare compares the effect to lace - delicate yet structurally robust.
The palette is defined by clay and terracotta tones, reinforcing the space’s connections to its region. The Stripes collection, also by WOW, is used for the bathroom areas, the series of linear relief tiles introducing a quiet rhythm.
The designer works on the contrasts between the structured geometry of ICON with the warmth of terracotta or between smooth tiles and the handcrafted irregularities of natural clay. She states, “I gravitate toward materials that stay true to their origins—natural stone should be real, not printed, and clay tiles must retain their raw, tactile beauty. WOW Design ceramics capture this with their handcrafted aesthetic and subtle imperfections.”
