15/05/2015 - This year, the padded chair that spent most of its life completely forgotten, can celebrate its anniversary as one of ONECOLLECTION´S most successful and iconic Finn Juhl re-launches. To mark the anniversary in New York the Pelican chair will be presented at ICFF in a special ARTWORK EDITION.
Onecollection has collaborated with the design company DOMICILECULTURE to unite two of the 20th century's greatest Danish artists: Finn Juhl and Asger Jorn. Jorn's drawing 'Macbeth' from 1942 adorns the new upholstery of the Pelican Chair in a tribute to Finn Juhl's greatest source of inspiration: The free modern art.
"This constellation is a unique and interesting crossover between art and design. At the same time, the Asger Jorn-motif on the fabric is a reference to the time and context in which the Pelican Chair was created" says Henrik Sørensen, Director of Onecollection.
New Finn Juhl treasures:
Nyhavn Drop Leaf Dining Table(1953)
Following Finn Juhl´s introduction on the U.S. design scene around 1950, he became inspired by the simple design of his American colleagues – Charles Eames in particular. After having sworn by wood as his favorite furniture material for years, he started to use more steel. Finn Juhl's FJ 5360 model or Nyhavn Drop Leaf Dining Table with a painted or burnished steel tube frame and wooden toes was Juhl's response to the earlier criticism, which had touted his designs too exclusive and unattainable.
The Nyhavn Drop Dining Table is re-launched in oak, walnut or teak veneer or alternatively in black linoleum with two flaps. The steel legs will be delivered in orange, light blue or black with toes in wood. Special hinges allow for the flaps to either be taken off or hang vertically at both ends.
'This is a completely unique table which, despite its modest look, has lots of character due to Finn Juhl's trademark sense of both detail and functionality,' Henrik Sørensen explains.
Reading Chair(1953)
Forever pushing the boundaries and rethinking the purpose of his designs, Finn Juhl once famously said: ”Chairs are like beds - they are made to move in. That is why chairs that only allow for one position are wrong”.
True to his word and his ideals, he designed his Reading Chair in 1953 as both a dining chair and a reading chair, which is equally comfortable whether you choose to sit on it facing the back or the front. This might sound both odd and complicated, but thanks to Juhl's genius, the result was a simple, unpretentious yet thoroughly well thought through and visually pleasing chair. The Reading Chair is manufactured in oak with a backrest in teak or walnut.
Circle Rugs (1963)
Finn Juhl was a versatile designer who ventured beyond furniture designs. Onecollection has followed his lead and now also manufactures his Circle Rug from 1963, which will tie together the exhibition in New York. As the name indicates, this series of rugs are characterised by their circular pattern - an indication that the swinging sixties were just around the corner! The rugs are produced in two sizes: 175x175 cm and 175x245 cm and in three different colour combinations. The rugs are hand-tufted in 100% fine wool.
New barstool
Besides the new re-launches and other well-known Finn Juhl classics Onecollection is proud to present the latest news from their contract collection: TIME BAR STOOL by the Danish architect Henrik Tengler. ”We are looking forward to showing our guests this year´s news and hope we will meet many interested visitors,' says Henrik Sørensen, Director of Onecollection.
