Ophelia: Illuminating Flexibility and Sustainable Design in a Playful Lamp

Alma Light's table lamp with a user-centred design

14/07/2023 - Flexibility and sustainability seem to be the keywords in design today. Doing more with less and achieving multiple design goals with a single gesture applies to every object of design, "from the spoon to the city", in the words of Ernesto Nathan Rogers. It is in this spirit that Andrea Gelpí and Iratxe González have designed the Ophelia table lamp for ALMA Light, an original luminaire that allows the user to co-design their atmosphere by manipulating the four methacrylate "petals" in matt white opal or Black & White that make up the shade, which is attached to the oak base with rotating rings.

Another characteristic aspect of design today is marked attention to user experience, which applies not only to our virtual lives but also to our physical surroundings. According to the designers, "Ophelia was created with the aim of not being a mere casing for light, but a lamp capable of adapting to its user." Indeed, Ophelia allows users to playfully interact and experiment with the intensity and visibility of the light, adapting it to moods, spaces and times of day or night by adjusting the four petals, which rotate independently 360°, creating multiple lighting possibilities.

This 'mischievous and disturbing' table lamp is available in two sizes, large and small, both with an E27 socket and a switch/dimmer conveniently located on the cord, making it suitable for a bedside table, a low cabinet in the living room or hallway, or even a shelf. By adjusting the rotation, users can choose to leave the light source fully exposed, partially covered or completely concealed, tailoring the direction and quality of the light to their preferences.

In terms of sustainability, which is not only economic but also social, ALMA Light works with local designers and suppliers, actively promoting local production and reinforcing Barcelona's image as a city of design while at the same time stimulating economic growth within a network of small local manufacturers, preserving the city's intangible heritage, which could otherwise disappear.
