Sancal celebrated its 50th anniversary at Salone del Mobile 2023. The Spanish brand booth pays homage to the exuberance and excesses of the 1970s, the decade in which the brand was born, and at the same time, launches a new product, the
Fiesta textile line.
The 1970s ushered in a new vision of architecture and interior design, cross-pollinating the iconography of music, art and cinema. It was a decade in which it seemed that anything was possible and everything was socially acceptable. It was the decade of disco and glam, voluptuous shapes and moulded plastic, bright colours and earth tones, bold geometrics and animal prints, freedom and transgression. Elements often combined to create an eclectic style that reflected the cultural and social changes of the time.

The 70s was also the decade of the groundbreaking "
Italy: The New Domestic Landscape" exhibition at MoMA, celebrating contemporary Italian design. During this period, Santiago Castaño founded
Sancal, and in the fiercely creative Milan of the time, he saw new ways of thinking about upholstered furniture, including functional and adaptable designs that could fit into any home. It was then that the company veered off from its origins in historically-referenced pieces to specialise in modular design, imagining a versatile set of elements to create an infinite number of compositions, transforming living space to accommodate the freer, more unconventional and informal lifestyle emerging at the time.
The
Salone del Mobile installation, designed by Estudio Sancal, presents a series of themed spaces, all with a hyper-coloured retro vibe, presenting an overall image of the company's production. The exhibition seems to have been conceived with a double meaning. On the one hand, a "mythological" reference to the brand's origins and identity. On the other, a vision of a more uninhibited approach to design, based on the combination of exuberant textures, colours and shapes.

In the installation, the “
office” area features a waiting area and conference room with
Elle armchairs, the
La Isla coffee table, the
Pion conference table and the iconic
Body chairs. The living areas, in a range of tones, from gold to green with geometric accents, are populated with bold volumes like the aptly named new Bold table, playful Link poufs and the Momic sofa. Finally, the opulent, glamorous chill-out area features the sophisticated
Duo Maxi in printed fabric, the curvaceous
Magnum and the brand's
Totem stools.
El Tenderete, the installation by Marc Morro, pays tribute to the brand's humble workshop origins. It comprises 8 independent cubicles connected by a simple assembly system, halfway between ephemeral architecture and a furniture item, combining the brand's core values of memory, craft, and innovation.
