SEM new collection
15/04/2019 - During the Milan Design Week 2019 SEM has presented, in the setting of the new space in via Garofalo 31, inaugurated last autumn, the latest products signed by names of international design: Paesaggio by Hannes Peer, Simultanea by Valentina Cameranesi Sgroi and the Gomito chairs by vormen, flanked by Lavish, a textile project by Mae Engelgeer. The Paesaggio collection was born from the collaboration with the designer Hannes Peer, composed of the Nuvola armchair, the Butterfly console and the Petali table lamp. Behind the natural iconography of names, there are hidden elements of furniture with a strong and defined identity, made possible by precise design and material choices.

The Nuvola armchair, a tribute to the great masters of Brazilian modernist design, is well-structured in three levels: a frame in lacquered iron that houses the exposed shell in wood veneered with Santos rosewood and a padding in feather and green leather to wrap the structure like a cloud.

The Butterfly console has a complex, organic configuration with new shapes, in which architecture, engineering and design meet. The sinuous three-dimensional wooden shapes that support the console top become a fascinating aesthetic element, which is available in two different fineshes and colours: a concrete handmade resin finish and a refined highcrafted glossy porcelain effect. The same expressive force is found in the Petali table lamp that loses the classic nature of an abat-jour by presenting 8 mobile iron diffusers that shield two light sources placed on the central axis of the structure.

Within the same instant more simultaneous events may occur, this is the basic principle of the Simultanea marble collection of vases and tray designed by Valentina Cameranesi Sgroi. Centripetal, centrifugal and movement forces are channeled into stone forms and a rotation on the axis becomes a vase, while an inclined cut suggests a container. Like a mechanical and material symphony, the Simultanea family uses the basic principles of marble processing to transform it into an accord of hard and soft, shrill and deep signs that work by contrast translating into five objects: Bolide in Botticino marble, Bolide tray in Arabescato marble, Magnetico in Bardiglio marble, Vortice in Sodalite marble and Simultaneo in Rosa and Verde Carnico marble.

The SEM 2019 collection is also enriched with chairs designed by the young Belgian collective vormen, composed of Edouard Devriendt, Emile Duyck, Leon Duyck and Jochen Schamelhout. Gomito Chair and Gomito Lounge are the names of the armchairs made with a thin and elegant hand-welded steel frame, whose curvature supports the precious leather, folded and sewn to act as a backrest and at the same time as an armrest. Both seats are available in red, blue or black and with Kvadrat fabric cushion upholstery. The Gomito chair and armchair are designed to become a tailor-made product in which the full grain leather of the backrest is destined over time to soften and accommodate the anatomy of the body.

Inside the installation created by Valentina Cameranesi Sgroi in the SEM showroom, revisited for the occasion, the novelties of the 2019 collection are flanked by Lavish, a series of acoustic panels in precious jacquard fabric by the Dutch designer Mae Engelgeer who made the textile experimentation the focus of its design. The panels represent a contemporary and at the same time precious approach to the textile surfaces which, thanks to the use of special yarns, give an unexpected threedimensional effect. Vivid, Radiant and Luminous are the names of the panels that find space in the showroom of SEM, characterized respectively by a fabric in paper yarn surface with vivid shades of yellow, pink and turquoise (Vivid); a fabric in a special dark blue thread with a radiant blue insert on a pink and fuchsia base (Radiant) and a silver metallic thread fabric with a wool bottom matched with pinkish shades (Luminous).
