03/04/2019 - Swedish design brand Hem is introducing its first decorative accessory collection, produced in collaboration with Modern Design Review. The collection will comprise of a series of decorative accessories, launched throughout 2019 at different international events; the first is next month’s Milan Design Week (8-14 April). In line with Hem’s ethos of making unique products with lasting value, the collection has been developed with the purpose of promoting strong independent creative voices and studio-based production processes.
The inaugural product from this new collection is the ‘Superscene’ ceramic collection from John Booth and Ian McIntyre, collaborating as Supergroup. These signed, limited edition ceramic sculptures are a reflection on the idea of ornamentation: their function is purely decorative.
’For Hem, these small-batch and limited-edition processes represent a sustainable way of launching an accessory line, making sure that even the smaller Hem pieces have lasting value and are kept and cherished for a long time to come’ – Petrus Palmér, Founder at Hem.
Ian McIntyre and John Booth pooled their talents, applying their respective skills to the making of the objects. The resulting 3 pieces each explore familiar techniques of ceramic ornament: hand painting is applied to the rainbow in a typically dynamic style by Booth, textural glaze is decoration enough for the cloud whilst a range of dipped and rushed glazes cover the flowers. The pieces are oversized and impactful, playful and designed to give pleasure. Superscene is a bold and joyful declaration of decoration.
Hem invited Modern Design Review to curate their new Decorative Accessory Collection with a view to exploring the creativity and exciting methods of manufacture that are found in small studio production, an area that Laura Houseley of Modern Design Review is particularly interested in.
'The collection is made up of exceptional pieces that are each true expressions of their makers. It has been great to explore, along with Hem, exactly what it is that makes a decorative, collectible piece of design. We are so excited that these products are being made available to Hem's audience' – said Laura Houseley, Founder of Modern Design Review.
The limited edition accessory line will be unveiled at Hem’s Gallery & Garden in Brera alongside new furniture collaborations with Max Lamb and Lucidi Pevere. From 8-10 April, the designers will take their turn to host an aperitivo within the space giving visitors the chance to question them first-hand about their latest works.
