15/04/2021 - Sight, Smell, Touch. The 2021 Poltrona Frau furnishings 'Take Your Time' is a multisensory experience that focuses on these three senses. The view is involved through the aesthetics of the different materials combined with each other: seats, tables and desks, containers, beds and dividers combine the classic Pelle Frau® elements in wood, fabric or marble. The new Smart Home Diffusers and wool accessories made in collaboration with Acqua di Parma and Loro Piana Interiors play with the sensoriality of smell and touch.
The pandemic has forced us to change many of our habits but has also been a chance to embrace new routines and lifestyles: the versatility of spaces and furnishings to meet our new personal and professional needs; multisensory pleasure as opposed to purely aesthetic pleasure; and the desire to use our time differently, in a more informed, hands-on, and active way.
With these concept the 2021 collection define a better quality of living and taking all the time needed to appreciate every last detail. 'Take Your Time. Feel the difference.' is almost an ode to tranquillity or, should we say, understanding. 'With our social lives reduced and our domestic spaces lived in and experienced more intensely than ever before,' explains Nicola Coropulis, Poltrona Frau Group CEO, 'we have a chance to concentrate on the present, savour every moment, and enjoy all those sensations, no matter how fleeting, that we didn't have time for before in our whirlwind of daily commitments in and outside the home. This opportunity to review our priorities, though enforced, gives us the chance to enjoy a better quality of living.'
For some time, Poltrona Frau has complemented its historic leather processing with research into other materials. Several of the new products in the collection are developed from the design phase onwards, on the basis of sensory duality - leather or fabric; wood or marble.
Like the In the Mood seating system, conceived from the outset with both fabric and leather upholstery and large, soft, and welcoming surfaces on which the materials can express themselves.
Or the Ginger and Ginger Ale chairs, now available with a new four-spoke wooden base and a frame made entirely in fabric or Pelle Frau' leather.
The headboard of the Volare Due bed also combines the luxury of a leather, fabric or velvet cushion with the rigour of the Cuoio Saddle Extra or Pelle Frau' leather upholstery around the bed frame. The original triangular cross-section headboard and the front feet in solid wood complete this design exercise on the theme of contemporary comfort.
Meanwhile, in its new fabric version, the generous and welcoming forms of the Archibald Gran Comfort are just as soft and comfortable as in the original design.
The company's desire to experiment with other materials is perhaps seen most clearly in the Infinito table-sculpture. Formed from a block of marble like no other in the world, the Infinito table cannot be replicated and is produced in a limited run of signed and numbered pieces.
With this authentic objet d'art Poltrona Frau aims to reiterate the meaning of true contemporary luxury, something that is not possible without materials of the utmost quality —a carefully studied design concept demonstrating unrivalled craftsmanship and manufacturing expertise. Such qualities can also be found in the Kyoto table, designed by Gianfranco Frattini in 1974 and faithfully revisited in 2020. The new version, in black lacquered open-pore solid wood, highlights even more clearly the fine dovetail joint work, with the solids and voids of the square pattern that exalt the graphical beauty of this masterpiece of modern wood craftsmanship.
The Pierre side tables also demonstrate an in-depth study of the material, exploring the maximum expressive potential of marble and reinterpreting it in a completely original way. In this case the top surface is obtained by cutting a sheet of Nero Pagoda marble into tiles of different width, which are turned so that the natural veins of the marble become straight yet staggered lines that run parallel to the longest side of the table. The effect is highly graphical and creates a modern and extremely elegant optical vibration.
Two other examples of virtuoso design and textural projects can be seen in the home office category. A particularly relevant space, very dear to Poltrona Frau, which here develops two different solutions for various work and spatial requirements: for a genuine study, the Peek-a-Book desk which embodies all of the typical elegance and comfort of a Poltrona Frau office; for a versatile workstation, the Iren desk, which is equally at home in both the living room and the bedroom.
Peek-a-Book consists of an extremely simple 'sheet' of wood covered in Pelle Frau® leather which is curved and folded in two to form the base and the desktop, as well as to accommodate two drawers and cables. The visual effect is that of a valuable bound book that symbolises the function of the object: in fact, the desk is a place for thinking, collecting our thoughts, and looking back over our memories; the most intimate and personal side of the person that uses it to study or work.
In the world of Japanese calligraphy, iren (ill) indicates the continuity created between points, lines and characters to ensure they remain in perfect harmony with each other. The same happens with Iren: one simple action is all it takes to slide the two overlapping surfaces over each other and adapt the desk to more traditional functions - as a surface on which to write, place objects, or store documents - or to support more modern activities performed on laptops, tablets or smartphones.
The Mi cabinets also draw inspiration from the Far East: a game of solids and voids, an attentive study of materials and forms and a design approach which operates by subtraction until it achieves the perfect balance between simplicity and elegance. They are upholstered externally in Cuoio Saddle Extra leather, embellished with an original vertical striped cannette texture. The storage units are framed with a metal structure that supports the raised marble top. The top surface of the body is in burnished glass and offers a glimpse of the inside, like an original display cabinet.
Conceptual simplicity and textural richness are also the stylistic hallmarks of Plot, a system of modular room dividers with two, three, or four elements. Geometric weaves, precious patterns, and sophisticated colour combinations exalt the beauty and the sensuality of Poltrona Frau's most iconic material. The artisanal virtuosity of the vertical and horizontal weaves that form the various patterns express all of the value of a piece of decor that is only an 'accessory' on the surface. In reality, Plot is a design that exudes personality and poetic intensity and, at this time of suspended animation, is particularly contemporary in terms of its ability to divide domestic spaces and functions.
Acqua di Parma meets Poltrona Frau. From the meeting of two historic and iconic purveyors of Made in Italy comes a project that combines domotics, aesthetics and innovation.
Airound® is the first Smart Home Diffuser to offer an original and innovative way of experiencing home fragrances. A living concept in which design, ergonomics, beauty and atmosphere are integrated in an aesthetic and interior harmony to enjoy with all five senses. The Pelle Frau® leather upholstery, expertly handcrafted with stitching and sartorial details, exalts the sculpted effect of the object and meets the fresh luminosity of the Acqua di Parma Home Collection fragrances. The diffuser can be used with three different fragrances, including the special Milano by Poltrona Frau, evocative of the capital of design. Thanks to domotics, the Smart Home Diffuser can also be set and activated remotely. This creative synergy continues with Airound® Car Diffuser, the first Italian-made designer car diffuser. A design object conceived down to the finest of details, guarantees an enveloping sensory experience even when you travel. The leather case in precious Pelle Frau®, specially developed to meet high international safety standards, is perfectly in sync with contemporary travel needs. The Home Diffuser will be available from September 2021.
The Poltrona Frau wears Loro Piana Interiors collaboration stems from a desire to expand the range of high-end fabric upholstery.
Poltrona Frau has chosen four of the finest Loro Piana Interiors fabrics to create two collections inspired by the respective geographical origins of the fibres from which they are made and their historic roots: Aboriginal, for the Merino wools of Australia and New Zealand, evoking the traditional native language of the Australasian continent, and Kashmiri, the vast and fascinating region of the Himalayas, from which the first cuts of cashmere left for Europe in the 19th century. The fine Loro Piana Interiors wools and cashmeres also take center stage in the Decorative Cushions and in the Aspen Plaid to guarantee upholstery and accessories of exemplary quality.
The 900sqm of the Poltrona Frau Milan Flagship Store, in Via Manzoni 30, are entirely furnished with the Take Your Time collection. Those who cannot physically visit the store will be able to discover the Poltrona Frau 2021 furnishing proposals through the Take Your Time
