The innovative bench ICON by Vestre wins the Red Dot Design Award

21/05/2013 - Vestre AS and Eker Design have been awarded the prestigious Red Dot Design Award for the innovative bench ICON. Since 1955, designers and producers have applied for the prizes, and the winners are presented in an annual award ceremony. The Red Dot Design Award has more than 11,000 submissions from 61 countries.

“This award is great news. It is an international recognition for the product we have developed, and it provides a jumpstart to the Milan iSaloni Furniture Exhibition this year”, says Jan Christian Vestre, CEO at Vestre AS.

The bench is a result of a close development process between the design agency Eker Design from Norway and Vestre AS. ICON represents a new visual expression for the public space furniture producer.

“We wanted to create a distinctive seating furniture, using unconventional materials and a modern expression. Our furniture is developed for public spaces, and the ICON bench has a rather untraditional expression for this segment. We think the product will give architects, interior - and landscape architects, and planners with passion for design a playful alternative when choosing furniture for their projects”, says Vestre.

The bench is developed for indoor and outdoor use and requires a minimum of maintenance. Materials are fibreglass, stainless steel and high gloss aluminum – all strong and durable materials that resist harsh weather.

Bård Eker, the owner and CEO of Eker Design, is most famous for design of fast cars and boats. The development of the Hydrolift high performance powerboats and the Koenigegg world record holding super car has given the company a high competence in composite materials. This is the reason the ICON bench is also available in carbon fiber on special demand:

“Through many years of naval and automotive product development we have gained great skills with glass fiber, carbon and other composite materials. In this project we saw the opportunity to use this competence in a different field”, says.
