12/09/2023 - The Twill Bar Chair, designed by Gibson Karlo for DesignByThem, is a contemporary take on a classic furniture piece. Bar chairs have evolved over time to meet the changing needs of society and design preferences, coming a long way from their humble origins in medieval taverns and historic saloons to become modern design icons and versatile pieces suitable for today's commercial and residential spaces.
The Twill Bar Chair by DesignByThem combines refined, practical design with inspiration drawn from the repetitive motifs found in twill weave and the subtle playfulness reminiscent of the malleable nature of plasticine, creating an intriguing visual juxtaposition of a seemingly supple material and the conventional sturdiness associated with wood.
"It creates a sense of ornamentation while providing strength in the legs and comfort in the back," say designers Sarah Gibson & Nicholas Karlovasitis.
With extruded profiles and neatly trimmed ends, the Twill Chair can be used as a bar chair or a stackable dining chair whose curved back doubles as an armrest. It is also a space-saving solution designed to fit neatly under a tabletop. Soon, the Twill Collection will be expanded to include an outdoor version in aluminium with new colour options.
Sarah Gibson and Nicholas Karlovasitis, the design team behind DesignByThem, founded the company in 2007 after graduating as industrial designers from the University of Technology Sydney. Their commitment to both aesthetics and functionality is evident in the Twill Bar Chair. DesignByThem products have found a place in the interiors of notable organisations and venues, including Facebook, Google, Dropbox, Sydney Opera House, Auckland Airport, Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co.
