Trained as a woodworker across a spectrum of domains from timber framing to fine joinery, Heather has combined these skills with her more recent excursions into metalwork.

Welding and metal fabrication is often considered in an architectural context, in structural forms and on an industrial scale, and the craft involved can often be overlooked. Heather has developed a range of work that incorporates traditional woodwork and contemporary metalwork, promoting the craft in metal fabrication within the context of furniture design. “Learning to work with metal has been really exciting, and understanding steel has meant I can solve design problems that aren’t possible in timber. It’s been fun to explore something new, play and think about how the materials interact. Since being introduced to metalwork and welding, I’ve noticed that it’s a craft that isn’t recognised enough, contrasting with the carpentry background where I start which is respected more as a traditional craft.”Heather Scott, Toro Collection
