05/10/2020 - Void Matters by Note Design Studio is Sancal‘s first purely conceptual collection which reflects upon the concept of a void.

Note Studio Design asked themselves: “What do the positive and negative part of an object represent? What defines an object itself, the matter or the void that surrounds it?”

The Swedish designs use this masterful exercise in abstraction to create four sculptural products. A new furniture collection that takes negative space as its starting point. The negative space, that we subtract, is the common element between them and a brilliant way to highlight the void idea.

This is the first time the two have worked together on a furniture collection born of a conceptual experiment and technical curiosity.
Entitled Void Matters, this collection reflects how void shapes matter. It presents four meditations on emptiness through four distinct furniture families.

CORE & REMNANT
Core and Remnant are two ranges of armchairs and sofas that are independent but complementary at the same time. Different construction techniques have been used to create and produce opposite forms from the same silhouette. Core is the essence, the origin, the constituent part. From a philosophical point of view, Core would be the positive part of the matter, while Remnant would represent the negative, the material that is discarded.

Core. The essence of a contemporary classic Core's volumes show matter in its pure state. Its formal design, which brings to mind classically-inspired furniture and shapes, presents its most contemporary facet through the materials used. Its generous and comfortable seat is embraced by a delicate quilted back.

The balance of the Core resides in the harmonious union of its parts, which naturally fit together like elements chiselled by a sculptor, as if they have been built from a single block of material. The sobriety of the armchair and sofas can be emphasized by using neutral fabrics or with bold colours.

Remnant. Minimum matter, maximum expression Remnant represents the material that the sculptor might have discarded after creating Core, a different but complementary interpretation of the same form. The product’s technical complexity has been one of the main challenges of this project. Its visual lightness and apparent simplicity are the result of a considerable amount of development, experimentation and engineering.

The essence of this design is characterized by the perfect fusion between industrial curiosity to find new constructive forms, the warmth provided by the artisan work of the upholsterer, the elegance of the design and its impeccable details. The subtle and elegant quilting that surrounds both the armchair and the sofa adds texture to an iconic design that can be upholstered in a wide range of fabrics.

Dividuals. Part of the whole Note presents a collection of upholstered poufs that connects complementary objects. Independent elements that can be used individually or as a whole. The cylinder can be slotted into the curve to create a single composition. When separated, the shapes are defined by the void between them. This way, by changing the arrangement of the set, positive or negative matter gives the pieces one meaning or another.

Dividuals are part of the Void Matters concept, through which Note explores matter, paying special attention to how its absence defines the shape of an object. Therefore, it is not surprising that one of the most characteristic features of these poufs is their inverted or “empty” seat. Combining or contrasting the textiles and the 22 stain colours available for the ash solid wood plinth, the plasticity of the Dividuals poufs allows the creation of aesthetic and functional sets.

Vestige. The beauty of the past vestiges The passage of time is an element that leaves a trace of the past as it sculpts matter. Note studio have created a family of tables whose bases remind us of architectural figures of ancient civilizations, eroded over time. The sculptural base is formed by a rectangular block from which a cylindrical section has been subtracted from upper part.

A tempered glass top rests delicately on the fine lines that have been exposed by the intersection of both geometric figures. An honest aesthetic that exhibits strength and beauty in simple ways. The sculptural base is formed by a rectangular block from which a cylindrical section has been subtracted from the upper part. There are three different finishes; Tarkett’s iQ surface in Marino blue, also by Note, as well as a wide range of lacquer or ash wood stain colours.

Limited-edition sculpture
To explore and demonstrate the foundational concept of Void Matters, Note created a series of abstract ceramic sculptures that brought the relationship with negative space to life. These were made by hand using clay from Totana, a Spanish town famed for the quality of its pottery since the Middle Ages. These are, in effect, physical embodiments of the sketching and digital modelling stages of Note’s design process.
