Doormats are the first object you come across when you enter a house. They have the task of allowing people to clean the soles of their shoes before entering, in the areas of transition and transition between outdoor and indoor environments, but above all they welcome and welcome guests in our home, constituting a fundamental decorative element, which makes the difference and makes the entrance more pleasant. We do not know exactly the history and the year in which doormats came on the market, as well as the carpets, but it is assumed in the mid-nineteenth century in Europe, when the cities were still without asphalt and sidewalks and were made up of beaten ground, the doormat became necessary.

In addition to fulfilling its task, the doormat must also be beautiful, original and design. There are various models of doormats, depending on the type of environment in which it should be placed and the material from which it is made. For example, technical doormats are mainly suitable for industrial or commercial use. They are large in size and made of materials with great properties of durability and efficiency, often embedded directly in the floor. Even in the private and domestic environment, doormats can be recessed or simply placed but, unlike the technical ones, they are small in size and made of various materials, with particular attention to the aesthetic character.

They can be made of nylon, rubber, vinyl, polypropylene, polyamide, aluminium or other metals. Compared to natural ones, they have an almost unlimited lifespan, are weatherproof and easy to clean. Negative aspect is the inability to dry well, or not at all, the sole of the shoes. Wood is a material widely used in the creation of these objects. In laminate or solid wood, wooden doormats are characterized by simple shapes enriched by inlays or joints and the same grain of the wood. They are usually modern style doormats, designed to give the entrance of our house something more than a simple mat. Also in natural fibre, the elegant and refined coconut doormats are the favourite among doormats. With excellent resistance to foot traffic, they have an excellent capacity to absorb moisture and to clean the soles of shoes while retaining dirt. Its natural colour always has a pleasant decorative appearance, but it is also produced in coloured versions. The defects of this type of doormat are the loss of filaments in the first days, when it is new. It will tend to wear out where it is most commonly used and must be placed away from the rain, favouring covered or sheltered entrances; difficult to clean, often many stains become permanent.
