The Kneipp path was invented in Germany by Sebastian Kneipp , an abbot that managed to cure tuberculosis thanks to daily immersions into the Danube river. The Kneipp path is based on the hydrotherapy principles. It consists in walking along a path of river pebbles that are placed in water basins full of hot and cold water. The classic path has two parallel 90 cm deep basins and filled with 32°C and 20°C water respectively. Starting with the hot water basin and ending with the cold one, you get a reinforcing effect that stimulates blood circulation and the immune system in your lower limbs. While cold water tones up and reinforces, hot water relaxes. Walking on the pebbles and thermal shock stimulate capillary walls and the massage made by water has a lymphatic system draining effect. The Kneipp path is therefore suited for people with circulation and water retention issues. The path often comes with hydro-massage flows in the hot water basin to intensify the hydrostatic pressure action. More, since 90% of nerve endings are in the skin, the Kneipp path has its effect also on the nerves relieving stress and insomnia. In modern spas, the Kneipp paths are built on-site or with concrete or fireproof EPS prefab basins which are covered with fiberglass or cement resin and layered with waterproof covering.
